I tried to get my grandmothers birth certificate several times (she was born
in 1903, she died at 27 years old, back in 1929 , so I could not see any
legal problem there.) from St. Joe county , and was turned down.My uncle
traveled from Ohio to try to get her birth certificate and was also turned
down. Finally I did contact the lady mentioned in Carol Collins post, she
said they don't have to search for them for genealogy purposes, but any other
reason you can give , they can not refuse to let you have a copy. I again
returned to the Health Dept. in person and was told they would not search for
them. After telling her that I had contacted the lady in Indianapolis, she
took the information, was gone about 1 minute and came back telling me she
could not find one. I really have my doubts that she even looked. I have not
pursued this further for the time being , but I will try again soon. So good
luck to anyone trying to deal with the St. Joe county Health Dept. for a
birth certificate. My advice is, contact the lady in Carol Collins artical,
and don't give up ! Most all of my genealogy in located in St. Joe county and
I feel this is not fair to make it so difficult. Good luck !
