There was a thread on this issue a few months ago -- well, actually it
was last August. I found a message I sent on the subject but not the
one it was in response to. Anyhow as I remember it, there were several
different stories coming from the clerk's office. I did find the
following, which may be of interest ...
Notice in "Michiana Roots" Sunday, Aug 30, 1998:
In case you missed the story in a recent Tribune, there is now a hot
line available to Indiana residents who are denied access to public
documents or public meetings. Anne Mullin O'Connor, Indiana's first
public-access counselor, can be reached at (800) 228-6013. Her role is
to help citizens understand the laws governing public documents.
She can also be reached by fax at (317) 233-1713, by email
<psv(a)icprian.state.in.us> or by snail:

402 W Washington St

[Michiana Roots is a genealogy column by Carol C. Collins. It appears
every Sunday in the South Bend Tribune.]

Hi,
I have a question for the list. I hope someone can
help me with this. I live in Texas and am doing
research on my family in Indiana, mostly in the South
Bend area some in Noble and Kosciusko Co. I just
talked to the St. Joseph Co. Heath Dept. about getting
copies of birth records for my father and grandmother
who were born in St. Joseph Co. She said that they
did not let you get birth records for gen. research in
St. Joseph Co. Does anyone know where I can get these
birth records.
Jerrold Willis Hatfield b.6/23/1917 in South Bend,
Indiana. Ella Myers b.2/3/1900 in South Bend, Indiana
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sandy
