Hi everyone,
By any chance, is anyone else on this list researching Harmisons of St.
Joseph and LaPorte, Indiana counties?
I am trying to find information on the father, mother and siblings of my
ggggrandfather, Isaac Harmison. Isaac was born in Ohio April 17, 1814. By
1830, He, his parents and siblings were residing in Pleasant Township,
LaPorte, Indiana. Isaac was the son of Samuel Harmison and Nancy Arnold;
their other children include: Samuel Harmison, b. 1812; Mary Harmison, b.
1816; James Harmison, b. 1820; Sarah Harmison, b. November 12, 1823; John
Harmison, birthdate unknown; Betsey Harmison, b. 1825; and, Catherine
Harmison, born 1830.
Isaac Harmison married my ggggrandmother, Eunice Barrett Harmison, in
LaPorte, IN in 1837; at the same time, he helped purchased farmland for his
brother, Samuel. Isaac and Eunice then removed to Wisconsin where they
lived the remainder of their lives.
Isaac's father, Samuel Harmison, Sr. is said to have died in White County,
IN in 1841. He was born in Virginia c. 1770. Isaac's mother, Nancy
Arnold, was born in Pennsylvania abt. 1778. I have been unable to locate
'proof' that Samuel Sr. died in White County, IN; and I've no information
as to where Nancy Arnold Harmison died; nor, when.
Isaac's older brother, Samuel, who was born c. 1812, wed Elizabeth Cornell
November 27, 1842 in Pleasant Township, LaPorte, IN; which I'm told, is on
the border of St. Joseph County. Samuel and Elizabeth had a number of
children including: Isaac, William, Mary Ellen, John, Jane, Willey Ann and
Sarah. Samuel Harmison, Jr. is said to have died in 1862; again, I've not
been able to locate death records for him. His wife, Elizabeth, with
children Willy Ann, Sarah A., and John, were living in Johnson Township,
LaPorte County, IN according to the 1870 census. Their son, Isaac, was
living in Lincoln Township, St. Joseph County, with his wife, Mahala, and
their son, William. I am trying to determine when and where Isaac and his
wife, Mahala died.
Isaac's brother, James Harmison, became a Mormon and moved to Utah where he
lived and died.
Isaac had a brother by the name of John Harmison, who is said to have been
born in 1824; however, a John Harmison has been tracked who followed the
movements of this particular family from Ohio to Indiana, living in the
same cities at the same time; and, who wed Isaac's wife, Eunice's sister,
Esther Barrett. The second John Harmison is known to have been born abt.
1803 according to the date of his marriage to Esther Barrett, and to
numerous census records. I've not been able to locate death records for John.
I've no information on any of Isaac's sisters, Betsey, Mary, Sarah and
Catherine except for their approximate dates of birth.
If anyone else on the St. Joseph County list is researching HARMISONS or
their connected line, BARRETT, or who would be willing to help me track
down Harmison death records in St. Joseph County, I'd appreciate hearing
from you. I'm an out-of-stater and generally speaking, those who live in
an area tend to know and have better access to available records.
Thanks.
Hope
