Hello listmembers,
I am new to the list but have been working on my Shanafelt line for a couple
of years. My Ggrandfather was Edward Shanafelt and he married Mahala Ella
Hine and they lived for several years outside of Mishawaka. In Grandma's
words she mentions that he worked at Perkins Windmill and Ax Company in the
very early 1900's. I was wondering if anyone had any information on Perkins
Windmill? Later they moved to "River Park" and he then rode his bicycle to
work. I am not sure if his job was still at Perkins Windmill as I have no
idea where exactly it was. Grandma (Bertha Shanafelt Flanery b. 1896) also
mentions her teacher, Miss Rush, a neighbor, Mrs. Reed, and her milkman, Mr.
Ford and a religious group known as "the Saints" In 1981, she wrote to and
received a nice poem by a local celebrity known as "Postal Poet" in which he
talks about Mishawaka. If anything sounds familiar to anyone, I would love
to hear from you. I have been unable to locate anything and would sure
appreciate some direction. Thanks so much for listening and I apologize for
such a lengthy letter.
Mary
