The 1930 census for Decatur, Van Buren County, Michigan, lists
ALICE JUDIE, age 69,
her son, SAMUEL JUDIE, age 42,
her granddaughter, ELEANOR B. JUDIE, age 18,
and grandson, SAMUEL JUDIE, JR., age 13.
All were born in St. Joseph County, Indiana.
Alice was born Susannah Love, and Alice may have been her middle name. Her
parents were Isaac Love and Eliza (Bell) Love, of Clay Twp., St. Joseph
County, Indiana.
Isaac was my great-grandfather's brother, and I'm trying to fill in the
blanks on Isaac's descendants. If anyone has any information about any of
the four persons listed above, I'd be very grateful to receive it.

Margaret,
I am not related to the Judie's but in my Title and Deed to my home there are
some Judie's. The first mention of them are in 1861
Martha Judie and her husband Samuel Judie
Daniel Judie
A Warranty Deed dated April 20, 1903, was to a Samuel Judie and Alice S.
Judie his wife to a Clinton R. Saltsgiver and a James A. Judie was the Notary.
It lists a Last Will and Testament Dated March 14, 1910, and Probated
September 3rd, 1914 Recorded in Will Record Vol 12 page 85 For Samuel Judie:
I Samuel Judie, of Penn Township, St. Joseph County, in the Sate of
Indiana, do hereby make and publish this, my last will and testament, herby
revoking all other wills heretofore by me made.
Item I
It is my will that my executrix hereafter named, after my death, pay all
my just debts, expenses of last sickness and funeral.
Item II
I give, devise and bequeath all my real estate and effects, of whatsoever
kind and wheresoever found, both real and personal property to which I may be
entitled or which I may have power to dispose of at my decease, unto my dear
wife, Alice S. Judie. The real estate, however, to be made subject to and
charged with the payment of bequests set forth in Item III herein, and I herby
charge my executrix hereinafter named to make the payments as set forth in Item
III.
Item III
I give and bequeath to my daughter, Emma M. Judie, now Emma M.
Schamerhorn, Five Hundred ($500.00) Dollars; to my daughter Hattie O. Judie, now Hattie
O. Malcom, Five Hundred ($500.00) Dollars and to my son Pardon P. Judie,
Five Hundred ($500.00) Dollars, all of said children being born of a previous
marriage; and to my son, Samuel Judie, Jr., born of my present wife, Five
Hundred ($500.00) Dollars.
In the event of the death of any of said children without issue (meaning
thereby children) before my demise, the devise or legacy shall lapse and be
revoked. Should any of my said children die before my death leaving direct
descendants (meaning thereby child or children) said heirs shall inherit the
legacy instead of the parent.
Said payment to become a lien against all my real estate of which I may
die possessed.
Item IV
I hereby nominate and appoint my said wife, Alice S. Judie, sole
executrix of the my will.
WITNESS MY HAND this 14th day of March 1910.
Samuel Judie
Signed, sealed, published and declared by said testator, Samuel Judie, as and
for his last will and testament, in the presence of each other, have hereunto
subscribed our names as witnesses, this 14th day of March, 1910.
George Beyler
David C. Gibson
Note: The above Will was recorded in the Recorder's office of St. Joseph
County on December 29th 1915, in Will Record 2 page 326.
No. 20
Estate of Samuel Judie
Minutes of which are entered in Entry, Claim and Allowance Docket 14, page
228.
On September 3rd, 1914, in vacation of Court, comes now Alice Judie and
shows to the Clerk by the last will and testament of said decendent that she
was nominated therein as executrix therefore. And files her Application for
letters of Administration, duly verified, stating that Samuel Judie departed
this life, intestate, at Mishawaka, in St. Joseph County, Indiana, on the 31st
day of August, 1914, that said decendent was at, or immediately previous to
his death a resident of St. Joseph County, Indiana, and that he left a
personal estate of the probable value of Two Hundred Fifty dollars, and real estate
of the estimated value of Forty-five hundred dollars, and that said decendent
left surviving him as his sole and only heirs at law as far as known to the
affiant as follows:
Alice S. Judie, 53, wife, Mishawaka, Indiana
Emma Schamerhorn, 45, daughter, Elkhart, IN
Hattie Malcom, 40, Daughter, Chicago, IL
Pardon P. Judie, 38, Son, Dakota
Samuel Judie, Jr, 26, Son, Mishawaka, IN
Therefore your affiant asks that letters of administration of the estate
of said decendent be granted to Alice S. Judie of Mishawaka in St. Joseph
County, Indiana.
(there is a lot more legal things here)
There lists a James A. Judie, Attorney for the Estate and there is a page of
information on the estate from him and there are typed acknowledgments from
each person who was in the will stating that they received full payment from the
estate.
It shows where Alice Judie paid the mortgage off on September 1st, 1915
Then evidently in 1925 she sold out interests in some of the property to:
Worthie W. Haynes of Elkhart
James R. Peters of ELkhart
George F. Krull of Elkhart
Joseph J. Kovacs of St. Joseph County
ALex Vargo of St. Joseph County
Then on July 25, 1927, she had a Power of Attorney Recorded and stated that
she was living in Decatur, Van Buren County, Michigan and was appointing the
First National Bank of Mishawaka her Power of Attorney, to collect the Mortgage
money from the above people.
There was an affidavit dated January 7th, 1939 for a Deed Record from the
State of Michigan for Alice S. Judie stating that she was 72 years of age and
that before residing in Michigan she lived in St. Joseph County Indiana for 67
years and that she was the second wife of Samuel Judie who departed in August
31st of 1914.
It goes on and mentions that Alice died sometime in August 1937 and that the
only living relatives were Samuel, Jr. and Eleanor Beth Judie Barnhart
(Granddaughter)
I might also mention that there is a creek here in the area that was named
after this family, there were on of the first settlers in this area.
So people get out those old Abstract of Titles and see what information there
is there. Lots of history to be found in them and lots of people to discover.
By the way I purchased part of the original property in 1972.
