Hi Jeffrey,
Consider this:
The Pine Creek Church of the Brethren is located 4.8 miles SW of Lakeville
and 2.8 miles NW of Lapaz, IN. It is located at the intersection of Pine
road and Stanton road near the southern boundary of the St. Joseph County
Line.
The following paragraph is from information sent to me concerning the
history of the church.
Mary and William (Johnson) were among the organizers of the Pine Creek
Church in 1854. When the congregation was organized, Bro. David (Pappy)
Rupel was called to the ministry. He built his house with large double
doors and services were held in his home. He lived between North Liberty
and Walkerton and Pine Creek flowed nearby, hence the name. In 1866 two
houses of worship were built, East House S.E. corner Pine and Stanton Roads
and West House N.W. corner Tamarack and Quinn. Blissville House was built
in 1875 and Center House in 1877. In 1912 the southern part formed their
own congregation. In 1921 services were discontinued at West House so then
East House remained and retained the name, Pine Creek. Pine Creek
membership in 1882 was 320. In 1950 the membership was 359.
NOTE: The West House refered to above (corner of Tamarack and Quinn) would
have been 7.8 miles due West of Lakeville and less than a mile south of
North Liberty.
The maiden name of the Mary Johnson (above) was ORNDORF. She kept a diary
from 1882 to 1904. The diary (actually 21 of them) were given to the
Church by descendants of Mary. Many of them have been transcribed and
published in the church newsletter each month as 100 years ago, etc. I
have copies of many of them, as many of my ancestors lived in the area and
were part of the church community. I have looked through what I have and
found the following.
- -----------------------------
Monday 30 March 1896. We let our pigs out of the penn & cleaned he stable
out. In the afternoon we went to W Kasers to see abut getting Alice to
stay with me this summer. Br. John Reed died about 5 oclock this evening,
verry sudden.
Wed 1 April 1896. Colder & windy attended the funeral of Br John Red at
the Meeting House preaching by Br Isaac Early from John 11 Chap Andrew &
Arthur came for Alma they need her at home.
Sat 17 Oct 1896. Cloudy all day-We heard this eve that a cusin Eliza Ann
Reed died lst night in Lakeville.
..
Mon 19 Oct 1896. Cold-Alma & I washd this forenoon and attended the
funeral of Cousin Eliza Ann Reed the procession came between 11 & 12
oclock. Preaching by Br Carly. Her age 68 years 4 months and some days.
- ----------------------------
My great grand parents, Henry and Mary Ann Orndorf Baughman lived in this
same community. One diary entry my Mary Johnson refers to Cousin Mary
Ann Baughman. My question: Were these three women all related and if so,
how. I dont have anything on any of their parents. Do you? I sure would
be interested in anything you might have. (I'm assuming your Eliza Ondorf
was really Orndorf).
Hope I have helped a bit.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving,

In the obituary for John REED it says "the funeral took place at
the
large Dunkard church southwest of here (Lakeville)" in April 1896 and in
his Wife's (Eliza ONDORF Reed) obituary-Oct 1896- it says "The funeral
services were held in the German Baptist Church five miles northwest of
La Paz, Ind." I have searched the net for church information without
luck so far. Can someone point me in the direction of information???
Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving.
