BOARD GRANTS POLICE POWER
LAKEVILLE ORGANIZATION GIVEN PERMIT.
County Commissioners Act on Petition on Detective Association Having Ten Members.
Police power was granted to the members of the St. Joseph County Detective
association No. 286 by the board of county commissioners Monday afternoon. Lakeville, in
Union township, is the headquarters of the organization, which has ten members.
A petition similar to that drawn by the Lakeville association was refused to the
South Bend Detective association about a month ago by the commissioners. At that time it
was hinted that the members of the association were also members of the Ku Klux Klan.
The fact that there is no police force at Lakeville was given as the reason for
granting of the police power to the second group of petitioners. Ernest S. Logan is
secretary of the organization. The other petitioners were C. Edgar Kershner, Durward
Berkley, Edward Hawblitzel, Harold F. Zimmer, Lester D. Riddle, P. H. Plummer, F. I.
Willmert and F. O. Plummer.
Articles of incorporation of the association were acknowledged and filed with the
secretary of state March 30, 1923, the petition states.
