The South Shore has been a vital link for Northern Indiana for many years.
During World War II, my father, Richard Berkheiser, Sr., rode on it on his
way to the Pacific about 1944. He said the train was nice in its heyday.
My parents and I rode on it a couple of years ago to go to Chicago to look
at the Christmas displays at Marshall Fields in Chicago. We weren't too
thrilled with it. If we go over there again, my father's going to drive us.
It'll be more convenient.

Hi!
This is for all who were looking for pictures and info on the South
Shore.
I did a google search by putting "Chicago + South Shore" in the search
window and several hits came up. I was ready to walk out the door so
didn't get to check the sites out yet, except for one and it had a short
history and many pictures. I have not had a chance yet, to try "Indiana +
South Shore" to see if it brings up different links. Also be sure to
include the quotation marks as I put them above.

P.S. Just a little story--one of my sets of grandparents lived in the
800 block of LaSalle St. in South Bend and as a child, I used to sit or
stand out on their porch and wait for the South Shore to come by. When
it came, I would always wave to everyone in the windows. Many times,
several waved back. It was a pretty sight at night when all the lights
were on in the train cars, but in the dark, the people inside couldn't
see me waving which I didn't particularly like. As a child I was very
intrigued by the South Shore and thought it would be lots of fun to ride
on and always said that when I got old enough, that was exactly what I
was going to do. Well finally, at the age of 42 or 43, I and a couple of
my children had the opportunity to ride it home after having been at my
sister's home in Naperville near Chicago. The kids just could not
understand why I was so excited, but I had a good time.
