Purple Heart
Ensign Paul E. Bailey, age 20, of 224 North St. Peter Street, was killed while serving as
a fighter pilot on a carrier in the South Pacific. His mother, Mrs. Frances N. Ehrke, has
been notified by the War Department telegram. Overseas since January 1944, he was on
Atlantic duty for six months before being transferred to the Pacific Theater. Ensign
Bailey was a member of the John Adams High School football team before graduating with the
1942 class. He entered the naval V-12 program in July 1942 and was employed by the Oliver
Farm Equipment Company before being called. Surviving besides his mother are a
step-father, Ervin Ehrke; and two brothers, Marine Corporal Charles F. Bailey, on Guam and
Seaman First Class Bernard Bailey at Great Lakes, Illinois.
We have found the following reference at the Indiana State Library website; World War II
database. We do not have the information because we do not have access to the microfilms
here in the Philippines but we are hoping for some help from our posting. Our goal is to
find the families of Indiana servicemen and present them with free photographs of their
loved one’s grave sites or their names as they appear on the “Tablets”. This information
will increase our chances of finding the families. Please help us!
