Marty and Georgia;
There was another South Bend newspaper that was published until 1942, and
that was the "South Bend Free Press". It was also called the "Indiana
Free
Press". Both should be available on microfilm at the St. Joseph County
Public Library's Main Library downtown South Bend.
Hope this helps!

Georgia, I was told that there was a second newspaper in 1940, not
just
the South Bend Tribune. I don't remember what the name of it was. My
Grandparent's names were Ralph, Sr., and Viola Smith, and they lived in
Ardmore. The house caught fire when the kerosene cooking stove exploded,
and caught the wall on fire. Back then the rooms were papered in
cardboard and newspaper. My Dad's folks were poor people. They lost
everything except the clothes on their backs. Dad said it wasn't much
past Christmas when it happened, he thought about the second week in
January. Because of that fire, he would never burn a Christmas tree when
we were young. It sat in a snow bank and fed the birds bread until
spring, then went back to the washout with other brush to help house
rabbits, and other birds. He finally went to an artifical tree. That's
all I know for sure. Thanks, Marty Smith Wells, Pierceton, In.
