I could be way off, but, it's an interesting story anyway. Back then the
borders probably didn't matter much as far as Schools were concerned. I'm
not sure exactly when, but, the stateline was moved further south at one
point. Could this be why your Indiana relatives attended a Michigan school?
The line used to start at the bottom of the Lake and go east. Now about
15-20 miles of Lake Shore are in Indiana. This is how we got the
nickname...Michiana. Many local businesses use the Michiana name. If you are
not from the area, it is cause for great confusion. This is why the airport
recently changed it's name from The Michiana Regional Transportation Center
to The South Bend Regional Airport.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is at that time, maybe where your relatives
lived in the part of Michigan that later became Indiana.
