I sent this to other mail lists. Perhaps someone here will have some information? Harvey
Walter(s) came to St. Joseph County around 1840 and there are at least seven generations
many of whom still live in the South Bend area. While I would be happy to receive any
information, I am particularly interested in connecting Harvey Walter to his ancestors.
Lucius Walter(s) ended up in the Bertrand, Berrien Co., MI area.
=============
I'm really looking for help on the Walter family. Trying to connect Harvey Walter
(1805-1843) who married (1828, probably in Litchfield Co., CT) Sally Stillman (1808-1858
b: Litchfield Co., CT). I have information on a Harvey Walter who shows up on the
Ashtabula Co., Ohio 1830 & 1840 census where at least three of Sally Stillman's
brother migrated to about 1828. I suspect that Harvey Walter arrived in Ashtabula from
Litchfield Co., CT between 1828-1830 and went on to northern Indiana between 1840-1843. I
have Indiana census information that supports the conjecture that a son of Harvey Walter,
Harvey Clinton Walters (b:1836) was born in Ohio. Perhaps a daughter Susan Sevilla Walters
was also born in Ohio in 1834. There is a Lucius Walter (1813-? b: CT?) that shows up on
the Indiana probate record for Harvey Walter. The first wife of Lucius Walter was Adeline
Fellows (b:~1817). I place him as a brother or cousin to Harvey Walter.
Here's some real conjecture. I imagine this family is from England. There is some
mention of Rhode Island in Harvey Walter's great-grandson's bio around 1900. Given
all this I wonder if it is possible that Harvey Walter is connected to family of William
Walter (1689-1770) as documented by June (Skinner) Parfitt in "The Descent of William
Walter". William Walter had five sons - Thomas, William, Pierce, Henry, Charles. The
families were in the Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York areas. I also find Tuttle
descendants (wife's of Thomas & Henry) living in Ashtabula County in 1820 -1870 in
the same township as Harvey Walter. There are many descendants of William Walter in
Litchfield Co., CT. I even saw one Walter family married to the Hurd family which has
connections to the Stillman family (Sally Stillman's mother was a Hurd). It all seems
plausible.
Please let me know if you have you run across either Harvey Walter or Lucius Walter in
your research? or if you are familiar with the William Walter family? or if you have
knowledge of Walter ancestors in Litchfield Co., CT? Thanks.
