I was out at Cedar Grove yesterday. The marker is a wooden cross, painted gray, with the name "Mc Cartan" hand-painted on it. No first name, no dates.
Unfortunately, my $10 digital camera chose that moment to lose its battery charge, so I couldn't get a photo.

Message Board Post:
This post is a long shot.
My father was the child of an affair between an African American Woman and a rumored Jewish store owner she worked for back in the early 1950's.
They were all from South Bend Indiana. The problem is that most of the people who would have known are all dead now. It was never talked about to my father and he was raised by his mother's husband at the time Fred Harris. His mother's name was Lessie Harris. This has been quite the mystery in our family and I have always been curious as to who this man is. My dad was born in 1952.
If you have anything I would love to hear it.
Thanks

I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the POOR Family of Indiana.
The first is a photograph of A. POOR which was taken at the James Bonney
Studio in South Bend, IN. The photograph appears to have been taken in the
1860's or 1870's with the man in the photograph likely in his teens or 20's
at the time it was taken. The second photograph is identified as Mrs. A.
POOR and Mary A. POOR and was taken at the L. H. Mandeville Studio in
Valparaiso, IN. This second photograph was likely taken in the 1860's
(portion of civil war tax stamp remains on the back) with Mary appearing to
be in her teens or 20's at the time it was taken.
On the back of the second photograph someone has also written "she is no
longer poor, but is none worse off than when she was poor". I believe this
is an attempt at a funny play on words with the surname POOR. I am hoping
to locate someone from this POOR Family so that these wonderful old
photographs can be returned to the care of the family. If you are a member
of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley
