Hey Kim. I do remember Mindy having a babysitter because we would play together after school sometimes and it had to be specific days. And, I remember one time feeling very disappointed because she was going with her babysitter rather than coming with me (it was on a Wednesday - and I don't have a clue why I remember that) and I think that it was just before her accident, which is why I have the disappointment associated with that. I am having very vague memories of that time and the kids at that time and I am searching my mind for a recollection of you. Did you live near Ann with the curly hair? I must have known you. I was one of about 3 black (or mixed) children who attended Marshall, and yes it was a difficult bunch to be a part of. I am sorry that the kids were not nice to you and I hope that I did not participate. I stayed back in the first grade and was terribly confused by that, but I was very tall with a little afro that I hated. I am going to search throu!
gh my family pictures to see if I can come up with a picture of Mindy and if I do, I will most certainly share it with you. I will be going to my Mom's on the 27th of this month and will look through the albums then. It is so nice to connect with someone about Mindy. I wonder if the school archives school pictures?

Wow, your post just gave me chills. I have often wondered how often Mindy is thought about. She died so young and had such a short amount of time to get to know people. It's a relief knowing that there's someone else out there who remembers her the way I do, as a best friend would...her favorite song Barry Manilow's Can't Smile Without You, sneaking her mom's huge sunglasses because they were the coolest things out there, and yes, definitely a Holly Hobby lover! I don't remember you, but that's mostly because we only lived on Brrokton for less than a year while our house was being built. My mom knew Mindy's mom, and that's how I met Mindy before we even started kindergarten (I was a student at Lincoln before I started going to Marshall, and when we moved to Brookton, my mom babysat Mindy after school for the winter.) But there is the slight chance you might remember me...lol, I was the odd one out in 1st grade at Marshall. Right before going to Marshall, I was in a pl!
ayground accident where I had hit my head on a see-saw and developed this terrible eye-blinking habit. I would blink my eyes constantly, and didn't outgrow it until the next year. Other than Mindy, I can't recall anyone who didn't use that against me at Marshall. It was a pretty mean group going on there in the first grade, lol. I've tried getting in touch with Mindy's mom and Christopher a few times over the past 20 years but I haven't had any luck. I would love to have a picture of her. There are times when I forget her face and I get stuck with a picture of her beautiful hair also. My parents wouldn't let me go to her funeral, which I'm actually thankful for. I wouldn't want that picture to be the one I keep recalling. Well, I've rambled on enough. It's been great reminiscing with you...wish it could have been about a happier situation, but it's been comforting. Thank you!

Who are you? The weirdest thing just happened. I was cleaning my house and my 8 year old son is watching "Bridge to Terribethia," which I am sure that I misspelled. Anyway, the part came on when the little boy was told that his friend died. And, I flashed back to Mindy and I began to cry and I told him that my best friend died when I was in the first grade. I struggled for a picture of her in my head and all that I could picture was her hair. I remember her room and all of her Holly Hobby dolls and I loved playing with her so much. I remember that she was hit by a car and then went into a coma. I went away for the summer and when I came back my neighbor told me she died and I was so mad at my parents for not telling me. I am crying now remember how it felt to loose her and her being way too young to be taken away. I remember running into her Mom and her little brother on the playground later and I don't even know how many years later it was, but it just felt so sad!
. Three years ago, I ran into a woman who reminded me so much of Mindy that I swear she looked like a grown up Mindy. After sobbing for a bit, I decided to come to my computer to see what I could find and I came across your post that came in just four days earlier. This is so weird and sad. I am wondering if you remember me? I went to Marhall and my name is Jennifer?

Looking for an obituary and perhaps a story in the South Bend Tribune about the accident. She was living at 1353 Oakdale in South Bend, IN, and the date her obit was published in the paper was 05/23/1978, pg 36. I don't know when the accident happened for sure. I would also love to have a picture of her. She went to John Marshall Elementary School on Byron Dr, in South Bend, when she was hit by a car or bus.
She was my best friend, and I was only 7 when it happened. It felt like it was my family's fault. My mom was her babysitter, and we went to my house everyday after school. But my family moved, so a new babysitter came to pick her up for the 1st time, and parked on the wrong side of the street. The rest is nothing but confusion because no one ever has told me exactly what happened. Now that I'm almost 40 yrs old, all of the adults who used to know what happened have forgotten, or just don't care to remember. I have tried to keep her memory alive, practically all of my life. But now her face is slowly fading out of my mind, after all these years. I can't hear her signing our favorite song anymore..."Can't Smile Without You."

Many of the parishioners at Our Lady of Hungary were buried at Sacred Heart Hungarian Cemetery on Indiana 2 (Western Avenue), on the west side of South Bend.
Here is an up-to-date index of people buried there:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~instjose/immigration/hungarian/Chris_Ko...
Pat Nowak of Zahoran Funeral Home is the sexton, I believe.
Here is an obituary index for the South Bend Tribune:
http://www.sjcpl.org/obits/search_form.php
You might be able to find an obit with the name of the cemetery or funeral home that handled the arrangements.
Or post the name of the person you're interested in, I'll see what I can dig up.
