The Hickory Street address that they're living at in 1930 is outside the city limits, so it wouldn't appear in the city directories. You might try the Elkhart County, Indiana message board, because there is an Ethel Campbell who died in 1944 in Elkhart. perhaps a volunteer will look up that obit for you.

I found a person living at the Children's Aid Society in the 1920 census. Is there anyone I can contact to find more information about this person and what happened to the parents? he was only 9 at the time.
Thank you,

I couldn't find either Gus or his youngest daughter in any of the St. Joseph County indexes. He didn't die here, as near as I can tell, nor did his daughter get married here, as near as I can tell. I couldn't find him in the city directory for either 1901 or 1904, either by name or by the Vistula avenue address. Sorry.

Message Board Post:
Looking for any additional info regarding Gustaf Betcher (probably Boettcher), born 1840 "Germany", immigrated 1893, residing 1900 on Vistula Ave in South Bend. Listed as a widower, living with his son-in-law and daughter, A.J. & Augusta Fandrey and their family. Also has another daughter (age 14) residing there, name appears to be Hattie or Hester, but may be Hedwig. Uncertain how long he remained in South Bend, when or where he died, or what happened to the younger daughter.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, I forgot to include this page from "Hungarians in America" from the section on South Bend. The last person on the page, Nicholas Guljas is married to Rose Muszer (your aunt, I think).

Here is your grandfather's obituary. Note it states that both he and your grandmother are from Szepliget, contrary to your grandmother's obituary.
It would be nice to find an emigration record for them. I have tried, without success. I found an Anna Muszer, but I don't think it was your grandmother. You might contact the Indiana state government, and request a copy of their naturalization records, which should list their place of birth.
Or you could gamble $6.00 and go to your local Family History Center and order the microfilmed church records for Szepliget and see who shows up.
As you may know, the Kingdom of Hungary was split apart in the Treaty of Trianon after World War I. Parts of it went to Poland, Yugoslavia, Czecholslovakia, Austria, the Ukraine, etc. Szepliget was in Bacs-Bodrog county of the Kingdom of Hungary, in the district of Palanka. Today, however, it is in Serbia and is called Gajdobra. So, you would want to order the Catholic Church records for Gajdobra, Serbia. Go to this website for the film numbers:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?...
I have also attached a page of info I have collected from the church record of St. Stephen and St. Mary of the Assumption in South Bend. Those records that say v31 are for St. Mary's and those that say v36 are from St. Stephen.
The first record lists Rosalia Muser's birthplace as Lzepliget. When I went through these records, I wrote down what I saw, not what I thought it should be. Obviously Lzepliget should be Szepliget.
Good Luck on your search!

Thank you so much for the info about my great-grandmother! I can't believe you could ever find such information - I have printed the obituary and plan to give to my mother and solve a life-long mystery for us. I have always felt proud of my Hungarian heritage, but knew so little about it! I guess my sense of proud came from loving and respecting my grandmother so much and the gifts she shared. Now I can discover more. Thank you thank you.

In my excitement, I did make a mistake - yes, my great-grandfather's name was John Muszer, and his son was Nicholas, who was born on Dec. 17, 1893! I am just so excited. I thank you so much for taking the time to post this for me - my cousin went to Europe years ago with hopes of finding where they lived without avail. I wish he were alive to read this - my mother turns 75 next weekend and this will be the best gift! We have been wanting to find out this information for so long - I figured it was like finding a needle in a haystack. Wow. Thanks so much. Diane Oxton

I found the marriage record for Hiram Penrod and Ida Burden in Berrien County, Michigan. Unfortunately, it doesn't give the names of the parents. I says that Ida was born and is living in Hamilton, Indiana and Hiram was born in South Bend, Indiana and living in St. Joseph County.
The clergyman who performed the ceremony is J. D. McCord. the marriage took place in Buchanan on Sept 16, 1881.

According to Nicholas Muszer's draft registration cards, he was born on Dec 17, 1893 in Szepliget, Hungary.
Are you sure that Anna's father was named Nicholas? Because there are an Anna and Nicholas Muszer, children of John Muszer in the 1920 census in St. Joseph County, Indiana

Hi, if you will go to the South Bend, St. Joseph, Indiana site, you will see I posted their obituaries. Wendell's wife was very good friends to my mother, Irma Szabo (who also passed away). As a child, being Hungarian, I used to sit around the radio on Sunday and listen to the Hungarian music with my family. It was a beautiful time to grow up.

I am beginning to research my grandmother's family - her name was Anna Muszer Weber - her father was Nicholas Muzser as was her brother. Her brother is the Nicholas you mention in your articles about the Hungarian Music Hour. So thank you so much for mentioning Nicholas's name in your article. My mother told me her uncle hosted the Hungarian Hour and she remembers listening to it at noon on Sundays while her mother made Sunday dinner. I hope to discover the town my grandmother came from in Hungary and your article gave me a bit of hope that I some more information might be out there! Thanks so much. Diane

I don't know anything about Ida's parents, or even if Nathaniel and Jane ARE her parents.
If you look at the census, it looks like the name is "Burden", rather than "Borden", and I think it was spelled " Burden" in the Dibean Marriage index, as well.
