Hi everyone!
I'm still looking for my elusive great-great grandmother, Emma (Bressler) Berkheiser. I've looked high and low for her and still hit the old brick wall. If anyone can help me solve this mystery, I would very much appreciate it. Here's what I have on Henry and Emma.
Rick B
--------------------
1. Henry Berkheiser, GG Grandfather. Born on 18 Mar 1843 in Harrisburg, PA. Henry died in 1014 W. Napier St., South Bend, IN on 4 Mar 1915, he was 71. Buried on 7 Mar 1915 in City Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Occupation: worked for Oliver, Shipping Clerk. Cause of death: Primary cause of death was Cerebral Apoplexy and Arterio Sclerosis.
In the 1860 Census, Henry was enumerated with his mother's parents, Daniel and Margaret Bressler.

AND
"The South Bend Weekly Tribune", Saturday, October 24, 1874, page 2
Henry Berkheiser vs. Emma R. Berkheiser; divorce. Granted. Plaintiff to have care and custody of children until further ordered. (NOTE: In case you were wondering, these are my great-great grandparents where Henry got custody of the children James and John.)
abt 1865 when Henry was 21, he first married Emma R. Bressler, GG Grandmother, daughter of Daniel A. Bressler (1825-4 Feb 1911) & Mary Rebecca Eiler (1827-9 Sep 1894), in Schuylkill Co., PA. Born abt 1849 in Pennsylvania. Divorce was filed for on 15 Sep 1874 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., IN. They were divorced on 15 Sep 1874 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., IN.
She actually disappeared before that about 1872. Apparently Henry caught her with another man, according to the divorce papers.
>From the Estate papers of Daniel Bressler, her father.
....and he [George W. Bressler] further shows to the court that the said Emma (Bressler) Burkheiser, onE of the children and heirs of said decedent, was the wife of one Henry Burkheiser and by him had one child, John A. Burkheiser, who is still living and a resident of said county; that in the year 1872 while a resident of the city of South Bend and living with her said husband and child, then of the age of three years or thereabouts, the said Emma (Bressler) Burkheiser deserted and abandoned her said husband and child, disappeared from her home and has not since been seen nor heard of by her family, relatives or friends.
Said administrator has therefore concluded that siad Emma (Bressler) Burkheiser is dead; her said husband, the said Henry Burkheiser, also believing her to be dead, some years since procured from her a divorce and married again, thus leaving as her only surviving heir entitled to inherit, her son the said John A. Burkheiser, to whom was paid the share of said estate which if living would belong to her.

I have an ancestor, Sarah Rakestraw, who was born in Ohio in abt. 1817, but both of her parents were born in New Jersey. Perhaps this is the same family? I would love to know any information on your family who lived in New Jersey and moved to Ohio. Thanks!

Irvin, you are wonderful. I have all of the obituaries (you sent them to me before), but I would love to have a copy of their marriage license and/or any marriage announcements that would be in the paper. They were married on 4-25-1885 in South Bend. His full name is actualy Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Schwarz, but he went by C.F. Wilhelm Schwartz.
They also had a son, Herbert Schwartz, who died as a small child on May 11, 1895. I would love to have his death certificate or obituary if they are available.

WHO IS HARTENSTEIN?
New Manager Askin & Marine Credit Clothing Store.
The question which has been asked daily for the past week "Who is Hartenstein?" has been answered by Hartenstein himself, who states with an air of one who knows, that he is the new manager of the Askin & Marine credit clothing store at 213 South Michigan street. He comes from New Haven, Conn., and claims the distinction of being organizer of the first store doing business on the dollar-a-week payment plan, the first one having been established in New Haven 19 years ago. He is placing a new stock here, reorganizing the store and its system and bringing everything up-to-date, much to the advantage of the buyer, who is now given the advantage of a charge account rather than a credit system, in the common acceptance of the term. Mr. Hartenstein states that he is a member of several live organizations and besides being a hustler is backed by a wide experience in his line, which he proposes to use to the advantage of both his firm and the buying public.
