Shirley, I married into the Hardin family, and their recent family
members hail from the Carolinas, California, Ohio, Florida... My
father-in-law did a lot of work for the railroad men (memorial follows).
They sometimes spell their surname Harding. My father-in-law, Frederick
Arch Hardin was a well-respected and pioneer in many fields and achieved
a lot in his life time. Someone in their family is doing a family tree,
and I am busy with searching my Magyar Hungarian maternal and paternal
ancestors, mainly, Galgoczi, Fejes, Horvath, Farkas, Szabo, Benko -
sidelines, Salchert, Tschida, Forsberg, Leverich. My recent hunt is for
Andy Horvath (buried in South Bend) who is a link to my great Horvath
grandmother, and Kertai-Racz. Most settled in South Bend, Indiana and
Michigan, migrating from PA - and Hungary. I was born and raised in
South Bend, and other than the weather, I really miss that town!
My (Hardin) father-in-laws memorial:
Hardin was elected alternate vice president of the BRT in 1964 and became
a full vice president in 1968, winning re-election in 1971 and 1975. He
was elected International president of the UTU in 1979 and won
re-election at national conventions in 1983 and 1987. He retired in 1991.
Hardin also served as chairman of the Railway Labor Executives'
Association from 1981 to 1984 and as chairman of the Health and Welfare
Committee for the cooperating railway labor organizations, handling
negotiations over health and welfare issues with the nation's rail
carriers, from 1973 through 1984.
In 1985, Hardin was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as a member of
the President's Advisory Committee on Mediation and Conciliation. He also
was appointed by President Gerald Ford as the labor member on a national
panel to study rising costs of medical care.
In addition to his union work, Hardin has served on the board of
directors for the national YMCA and was active in Democratic Party
affairs.
"Hardin's death marks the end of an era," UTU International President
Charles L. Little said. "All UTU members, and working men and women
everywhere, owe Fred Hardin a debt of gratitude for his tireless efforts
on their behalf. We extend our sincere condolences to his family."
Hardin was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor, in 1991. He is
survived by a daughters Carol H. Mascia of Boca Raton, Fla., Jane
Hardin-Dikman of Tampa, Fla., and son David Hardin of South Florida, and
six grandchildren.
The family requests that contributions be made to Hospice by the Sea,
1531 W. Palmetto Park Rd., Boca Raton, Fla. 33486
Warm regards, Nadine

Hi Pamela, I have a question on the combined (years) access, the
combination includes a few townships, such Warren Township. I just want
to know (I assume this is on film) if you can access those records as
well?
I do have someone that has been graciously helping me gather documents
for many years. If a person is born in another
country (not county) and they came to the US, would they be required to
re-establish their birth, and if so, would their original place of birth
be listed on the document?
If they became citizens, and lived in South Bend, where could I access
those records?
Did places like Singer require a social security number on their
employees after it was enacted, 1937? What about the years before? I
had many relatives employed by Singers, Studebakers, etc. back in the
early 1900s.
Some of these questions I have asked before, but I lost my email to them.
Thank you so much for any assistance. Nadine

WOULD LIKE A LOOK UP ON EDWARD M BARNES DOB 9/13/1887 MARRIED A LADY NAMED
SARAH IN ST JOSEPH, IN. THEY HAD TWO SONS BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY THING ON
THEM, THEY MOVED TO CALIFORNIA SOMETIME IN THE THIRTIES OR FORTIES. ANY

ELISA BARNES-SHIZAK :-)
Mike,
I only have access to the county vital statistics indexes (birth, death and
marriage) from 1882-1920. The South Bend Area Genealogical Society has some
census indexes online 1870, 1880, 1910. You can find them here
http://www.rootsweb.com/~insbags/st_joe_co_census.htm. There are some
WIECZOREK's listed for 1910.
Hope this helps,
Pam

Information
We are the former Rootsweb Mailing Lists of INSTJOSE, INELKHAR, INFULTON, INKOSCIU, INLAGRAN, INLAPORT, INMARSHA, INNOBLE, INPORTER, MIBERRIE, MICASS, and MIVANBUR. Due to a long history of little to no traffic it made sense to merge all groups into one regional list. A discussion and research group covering the history and genealogy of the counties that make up the Michiana area. Counties in Indiana; St. Joseph, LaPorte, Elkhart, and Starke. In Michigan; Cass and Berrien. Also counties of Greater Michiana. In Indiana; Fulton, Marshall, Porter, LaGrange, Noble, Kosciusko . In Michigan; Van Buren. Anyone interested in Michiana is welcome to join!
