Not sure of the whereabouts of Salem Church. There is a small cemetary that
is very overgrown south of US 20 on Beech Road. It is on a country lane back
in a woods that backs up to the modern day Chapel Hill Cemetary.

I would like to hear more about Pleasant Valley, too. Some of my ancestors
were:
1. Henry DELCAMP Sr b. ca 1800 in PA; died Feb 1883 Mishawaka; buried at
Salem Church Cemetery in Pleasant Valley.
2. Rev Henry Delcamp b. 2 Jan 1827 in Pottsville, Schuylkill, PA; d. 29 Jun
1890 in Mishawaka; buried at Salem Church Cemetery in Pleasant Valley. He
married 15 Feb 1849 in Wayne Co, OH to Mary Ummel, daughter of John &
Magdaline (NAFZGER) UMMEL. Henry moved his family in 1853 from Ohio to
Pleasant Valley.
3. Rev John Delcamp b. 22 Apr 1850 in Ohio; d. 12 May 1925 in Three Oaks, MI.
He married 8 Nov 1853 in Pleasant Valley, Sarah Isabel Pettit, dau. of James
Krozer PETTIT and Julia Ann HOOVER. They had 4 daughters born in Pleasant
Valley.
4. James Krozer PETTIT (1824-1910) was the son of Alexander & Elizabeth
(KROZER) Pettit. Their family is listed in the 1840 census for St Joseph
County. They lived in the Pleasant Valley area. Family tradition has it
that James K Pettit came to Pleasant Valley in 1833 when he was 9 years old.
He was baptised in the Elkhart River at age 16.
Are any of these family names familiar. I would love to meet new cousins.

Would the Salem Cemetery of Pleasant Valley be the same as Salem
Church Cemetery in Ligonier, IN? If so, would someone who knows that
church/cemetery look at a photo we have online taken 1886 of the
church and let us know if it is the Salem church.

Joe,
I grew up one block away from Pleasant Valley Church on Curtis St. I am
very familiar with what was once Pleasant Valley, but never knew about its
existence as such until recently. The center of Pleasant Valley is situated
on Woodlawn between Day and Curtis. If memory serves, that block is also
occupied by a large two story brick home that is fairly old (facing Day Rd),
still owned by the Clark family (I think).
If I manage to get some photos or history of Pleasant Valley, I'll share
them.
I have family buried nearby in Osceola and lots of ancestors from the
Lakeville and Mishawaka area.
Thanks for the help.

No history but this area is just two blocks from my house. There is a church
there now, a rural area, surrounded by farm land and a few small housing
projects.
Do you have family buried nearby?

There is/was a small town in St Joseph County called Pleasant Valley. This town is mentioned in Census records (1850) and was the home of the County's first church building (built 1832). The church built a new building next to the original in the early 60s that is still active today. Pleasant Valley is still shown on some maps as being situated two blocks east of the Church at the corner of Day Road and Beech Road. This is now part of Osceola. I have located a nearby resident who may have photos of the original church.
Does anyone have any history they can share on Pleasant Valley? What happened to it? Why/how was it formed? Where might I look to find out about Pleasant Valley?
Best Regards,
Richard Smith
Have you tried the St. Joseph County Genealogical Society to see what
material they would have on this township and the people who lived there.
They would have all the county info on vital stats (if it was being
collected at that time), military units and soldiers names, even property
owners along with maps of the area. They might even have Church membership
lists, service club type organizations members list, and so on. They would
be your best bet. -- Also talk to them or your library to see what
newspapers that may have been published in that time period and look at that
particular time period. I've had extraordinary luck in finding good
information from these Societies. Good hunting. Sandy Childs in Calif.

Hi Sandy!
Thanks for the information. I am just starting over on my mother-in-law's
family and have forgotten how to get started again. My father-in-laws side is
completed back to the 1750s with some 3,000 names and more coming in each
week. It's amazing what one forgets when one finds all sorts of unknown
family members with lots of information. The starting is the hard part --
locating where they came from.
Thanks for all your reminders. I needed that.

If you haven't already, one of the first steps I'd take would be to contact
the County (where your ancestor lived) Genealogical Society and see what
they have. You won't believe the specific records that county will have on
their individual families. If they don't have specifics on your family,
they will have great county, state, federal census and all kinds of military,
birth/marriage/death, school and perhaps newspaper records. Try them,
you'll be nicely surprised. I went on a genealogical vacation in Iowa last
year and hit several counties and their Genealogical Societies -- some were
not organized and the others were super organized. The prize was that I
went to Lucas County Gen. Society with just the name of my great-grandmother
and possible name of her father and was magnificently surprised to find
generations of information on this family. They were one of the pioneer
families in the area and because of the many children, had bookoo
information on all the children, their occupations, their wives and
families, and the grandchildren, and obits (newspaper extracts from ancient
newspapers were cut out and cross-filed to the family surname.) I felt that
the heavens had parted and the sun shined down from above and the song
"Hallelujah" was playing. The best part of it all for me was to find that
these official "old settlers" had NEVER been written about in any of the
previous two History of Lucas County books put out or otherwise
celebrated -- and because I got there a week before the cut-off for the
print date for the newest (third book in 150 years) County History book, I
was able to throw together an article about them and now they are in a
history book for posterity! I think they were calling me to tell about
them, what do you think? Ever since then, I have touched base with County
Genealogical Societies FIRST, had all their magnificent help (with volunteer
labor tossed in, I might add) and then proceeded. Work smarter, not harder
is my motto. Good hunting. Sandy Childs
