Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thanks Mark, the map was very useful.
Can you/anyone tell me what the building (church?) represented in block 23
of Union Township is?

When I get stuck, I go to www.planetsearch.com (it uses 10 search engines
simultaneously) , in the search box, try something like Woolen Mfg. Co.
St. Joseph County or something like that. I surprisingly has a lot of
success with obits in my genealogy searches. Just a little help, I know.

Hello List,
I've posted an image of Saint Joseph County as it appears from the "Maps of
Indiana Counties in 1876". It is a large file and will no doubt take some
of you a bit to open. I apologize for chopping off the tip of Lincoln Twp.

You may know it as the Ball Band plant. According to _A Mishawaka
Mosaic_, edited by David Eisen, "... the company was incorporated in
1874 under the name Mishawka Woolen Manufacturing Company." The name
"Ball Band" "... originated through one of the company's early products,
the Knit Boot, which had a black band around its top. In 1891 a Red
Ball was added to the band, and in 1901 the words RED BALL and BALL-BAND
were registered as trademarks." It was later known as the Mishawaka
Rubber & Woolen Mfg. Co., and in 1922 became a wholly-owned subsidiary
of U.S. Rubber.
My husband's grandfather worked at the plant when he first came to
Mishawaka, just before the turn of the century. His occupation appears
in the 1900 census as "shoemaker - rubber".

I have an obit for my g-grandfather that states he worked for the Woolen
Mfg Co. I have never heard of this corporation. Is there any place on
the web that I can read about it. It will be some time before I am able
to go to St Joe County. Was there a successor company? Did any old
records survive? I am interested in any info at all.
Thanks..

Thanks, Mark, I really appreciate it. Since I live in Pierceton, I
cannot just pop into the South Bend Library and do a quick look up. And,
when I am in the area, it is always at New Carlisle, and not when the
Library is open. So, it would be great to have them on line. Thanks so
much!!!!! Marty St. Joe. Cty. native

Actually, county and township maps are readily available at the Saint Joseph
County Public Library in the Local History/Genealogy Room. They cover a
wide time frame. In addition, you can view maps in the Saint Joseph Co.
Recorder's Office. They have maps dating back into the 1830's.
I personally do not have anything older than 1910. What I'm going to try and
do is get the images from this volume on-line and I'll be experimenting this
weekend on the best way to do this. I have a couple newer maps I plan to
scan and post too. I'll drop a note here when there is something to look
at.

Mark, thank you so much for letting us know exactly where the township
line lies. Would there be anyway that you could get ahold of an "Old
Twp." map to put on the web also?? I have been researching my Boyer,
Kring, and Deitrich famiies, and don't know exactly where in that time,
they were born. I know the county line has changed, so that part of my
Grandcestors were born in Marshall County, but needto pinpoint further
where in St. Joe. the rest were. It is hard to just say, Twyckenham
Hills, and not be able to pinpoint the township, further. Thanks so
much. Marty Wells in

Greetings list,
I'm going to try and get a township map posted on the Saint Joseph County
INGenWeb site this weekend.
For the record, the University of Notre Dame straddles the line between
Portage and Clay Townships. The line jogs around a bit, but basically it
follows a line from the Saint Joseph River and down Douglas Road to the
intersection of Juniper Rd. (Clay on the north side, Portage on the south).
The township line then heads south along Juniper (actually the old Juniper
Rd line, which sat back a ways west of the current Juniper Road). This
leaves the bulk of the campus in Portage Twp., with the Joyce Center being
in Clay Twp. The Clay line then generally follows the South Bend City line
back to Edison (east) then follows Ironwood North to the state line.
If in doubt, and if you know an address, call the Township Assessors Office
and they can confirm an address is within their taxing district. I'm not
sure of the historical township line, if they have changed over the years or
not (as the county line has), it's safe to say they may have.
Happy Hunting,

Marcia, I am not sure, I went to Olive Twp. Elem. and then on to New
Carlisle Jr.Sr. High and graduated with the last class of 1968. My
parents are Ralph and Martha Smith and they still live on Wintergreen
Road, let's see, it will be 47 years on Halloween. I grew up in the
neighborbood with Bill and Leah Carr, Martin and Martha Garrett, let's
see, Meyers, Henry and Deloris Ward, their oldest daughter Laurel and I
are still best friends, Wrobleski's, Oscar Bunton, and I am still trying
to think of other neighbors in the area. My siblings are: (Ralph) Steven
Smith, graduated 1967, Merry Anne, in 1972, in the New Prairie High
School, Ronald Scott, in 1974, and Richard Joseph in 1976. Does any of
this ring a bell?? I also had two Cousins that Graduated earlier, they
were: Mary Jo and Walter Donald (Bud) Stubbs. They rode my Uncle's bus
from Warren Twp. before South Bend Community School Corp. came into
being. My Uncle's name was FRANCIS BOYER, and my Mother was born on the
Boyer Family Farm, that is now the Michiana Regional Airport jet runway
extension. Of course the by-pass also runs where my parents home used to
be, the down ramp onto U. S. 20 that heads west to LaPorte and Michigan
City, etc. Anything sound familiar??? Your name sounds familiar, but
can't put a face to it. I moved from home 30 years ago, but still go
back as my Mom had a stroke on April 26. Let's see, there is a Trucking
Company now on Henry Ward's farm. They widened Strawberry Road and call
it Larrison Blvd. now. Carr's still live on Early Road. Garrett's both
passed on some years back. My first bus driver was Mr. Brugh. Also had
Mr. Street, who used to own the Trailer Park on U. S. 20 just east of
town. Dan Akin is a shirt-tail cousin on my Mom's side of the family.
Amzie Miller was the Principal when I was there. I'm running out of
ideas. You will have to help me out, been down here, too long. Write
when you can, and thanks. Martha E. Smith Foreman

Hi Darlene,
Yes, according to the atlas, it was Saint Joseph County, but what would the
township be? Any idea?
Thanks.

Can someone tell me what township Notre Dame would be in? Back in 1890
my grandparents moved to South Bend, from Michigan, not far from Notre
Dame and he worked at a brick factory. I guess most towns had their own
brick factories back then.
I had an aunt and 2 uncles born in South Bend during that time from 1890
to 1900 to these grandparents.
Thanks.
