Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
As a suggestion, try the St. Joseph public library. They have a clipping
file for most businesses that have existed. They also have newspaper
collections. They send out obituaries, five for $2.50. They are great! You
can search their obits on line.
Also, the Northern Indiana Historical society has an extensive collection
of Photographs and business information. Their collection is not online, but
you can e-mail them. Photographs are $10.
You can also search the Notre Dame University archives on line. I found
letters from my Great Grandfather and Great Great Grandfathers there.

I'd appreciate being advised of the address and, if necessary, corrected
name for the Orvis Funeral Home in South Bend. Thanks for the help.

I looked in the phone book hoping to find Orvis or anything similar. The
only things that might be of help to you were the advertisements. Forest G.
Hay (South Bend) claims to have been around since 1920. Thallemer-Goethals
(Mishawaka) has been in business since 1926. McGann (South Bend) has been
around since 1842. If you want any of these addresses or phones, let me know.

Hi Mary,
The Mc Ginty Family that my husband decends from
is from Ballycroy, County Mayo, Ireland. Several
weeks ago, his g grandmother's brother's gg grandson
contacted me (confused?). It seems our line left
Ireland in 1883. However, I do know that the McGinty
name is very common in that part of Ireland. You may
want to join the Mayo mail list at rootsweb, if you
haven't already. John said that there is still one
brother unaccounted for, but his name is Anthony.
Sorry that I couldn't be of too much help today.
=====
Sincerely,
Edwina Ward

Hi Edwina,
I have recently finished transcribing a 4 page autobiography of my
Grandmother and in it she mentions that she (Bertha Shanafelt) and her
husband, Vincent Flanery lived for a while in a logging camp in Alba, MI,
and lived near a cousin Joe McGinety.
Alba is in Antrim Co., MI.
Is McGinty a very common name and have you every found any of your line in
Michigan? I am curious because I am currently working on my Flanery line
and do not recall grandma ever mentioning this name before. In fact, I had
no idea that our Flannery immigrant was tied in with anyone else in the
states. Of course, the Flanerys had many children and could have been
related through them. If you have traced your McGinty line, have you ever
run across a Joe McGinety from Michigan?
Just a little background information on my line. Peter Flannery/Flanery
arrived inNY in June 1837 leaving from Co. Galway on the ship Hibernia
(although a now deceased cousin visited Ireland and said that our Flanerys
were from Mayo.) He settled in Allen and Noble co., IN, and married first
Mary Crow (an Andrew Crow was on ship with him) and married second Elizabeth
Harter. It was Peter and Mary's son, Martin Flanery (Married Mary Julian)
who came to Michigan in the early 1900's. His son, Vincent was the one
living for a few years in Alba near his cousin, Joe McGinety. Do any of
these names sound familiar to you or tie in with your family at all? Thank
you for your time. I realize this is a shot in the dark but your name just
caught my eye.
Mary
PS I have quiried one other McGinty researcher and if you would like to
email him for a possible connection, his email addy is tmcginty(a)ici.net

Hello All,
I just found and joined the Marshall and St. Joseph County Lists and look forward to discussing Carbiener, Walmer, Berger and Ott families with those interested. These families are from St. Joseph and Marshall counties for the most part and arrived as early as the late 1840's. My immediate link is my GGrandfather, John Carbiener (Jean Carbiner) from Alsace, France who arrived in the U.S. in 1850 making his way to Bremen, IN in about 1853 or so.

Hello,
I am hoping someone on the list is available to look in the 1942 city
directory for Marie Mathes/Mathis. She was listed in my gg grandfather's
obit as a surviving sister, and it read that she was living in Southbend,
Indiana. Any help would be appreciated.

One thing I found with the genealogy.com library, they have alot of birth,
death and marriage records for St. Joseph County. I got into the books and
some I went thru page by page and found a great deal of information.....that
I would not have found otherwise because the names were missplelled.
You can e-mail the archives in south bend and they will see if they can find
the marriage applications. jurschel(a)CYBERLINK.com. they will e-mail you
back with what they found and tell you price. They are very reasonable and
although they have a small staff they have sent things out quickly.

AnneYou are wonderful that is our Grandma Grace's birthdate! Maybe? I have

Angie,
There is a Curl (no first name listed) born in St. Joseph County to a Hattie
Curl. Fathers name not given either. A female born January 20, 1885.
also..James Nash and a Hattie Curl had a female child born May 1st, 1883 (no
first name given)St. Joseph County, Indiana
A Hattie Curl married James A Nash on January 16, 1879 St. Joseph County
Indiana
There are numerous other Curl's listed in South Bend Area. This is from the
Genealogy.com site. If this is the right time frame....I have found my
GGgrandfather had 3 wives, he outlived them all. And 2 of his wives were
married before also which made for allot of Surnames to wade through.
Anne
Hi Group,
I just received a document that has our James O'Donnell married to a Hattie
Curl. I had her listed as Hardy or Beyler the Curl name is new to me. The
document states that they were both born in Indiana. It is not specific as
to where but South Bend and the surrounding area is where the rest seem to
be from. Do any of you recognize the Curl name? I went to the necrology
site and found a few Curl's listed but being a woman who knows what name the
obituary would be listed under. She seemed to have had a lot of names!

I have come across a copy of
"HISTORIC BACKGROUND OF SOUTH BEND AND ST. JOSEPH COUNTY IN NORTHERN
INDIANDA" published by the Shuler Colfax chapter of the DAR in 1927. they
want $40.00 for it and it is in wonderfull condition. And guite a very nice
little book.
I know this is a research list...so forgive me if I have broken any rules.
But I feel this is a treasure for your area. SW Michigan is mine.

Are you sure it's Dodge, not Studebaker? Pat
