Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
For those that want to try requesting help directly from a library, the
staff at the Elkhart Public Library will do simple lookups in the
materials at their library. Keep in mind that this library is NOT in
St. Joseph Co., but there are some excellent references in this library
because of the close proximity to St. Joe Co. The City of Elkhart is
only about 5 miles from the county line so there was/is a lot of
information that pertains to both counties.
Mail should be sent to: Reference Desk
Elkhart Public Library
300 S. Second St
Elkhart, IN 46516
As always when requesting help by snail, be sure to enclose a
self-addressed stamped envelope. If copies are made, the staff will
inform you of the cost and forward, once the money is rec'd.
Hope this will help some of you that are 'stuck' on your ancestors.

Along the lines of writing to officials for genealogical information, there was a
recent article in RootsWeb Review, Vol. 1, No. 12, 2 September 1998; that gave
tips to use when writing for these records. That article, titled WRITING
GENEALOGICAL CORRESPONDENCE by Doug Smith, may be downloaded from
<ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review>.
[This message is for those that unsubscribed from RootsWeb Review. The article
was not included here as anyone on a RootsWeb list like this automatically
receives RootsWeb Review unless they send an 'unsub' in for that mailing.]
Have you tried the Necrology File on the Kosciusko County web site?
I thought it started in 1920 but I am not sure. I have had great luck with
this.

Hi All,
O.K. I spoke to a lady at the birth record office in St. Joseph County. The
following is what she told me about obtaining birth record information.
You need the name of the person their birth date and parents names if
possible.
You need to ask for the information on the birth record you cannot get a
certified copy. The birth record information will give you the same thing.
They will do lookups for genealogy and be patient they may not be able to get
to you right away but, they will answer. They have birth records only from
1882 onward. If you person was born prior to that ask me for a lookup I can
get some info. before 1882 from the library. She had no explanation as to why
anyone was told they couldn't not get any information. So try again and let me
know what happens. Remember ask for the information on the birth record not a
copy of the birth certificate and tell them you are doing genealogy research
on your own family. Good luck! Let me know what happens.

Mary,
There are plenty of resources in the County.
Death certificates are issued by the St. Joseph Health Department. Send a SASE with the
name
of the individual and date of death. They charge $5 (I believe) for each record found.
St. Joseph County Health Department
County-City Building, Room 825
227 West Jefferson Boulevard
South Bend, IN 46601-1870
The St. Joseph County Public Library will provide copies of obituaries from among
several local area newspapers. They accept donations for the cause - I suggest $2
for each person as a minimum. Send a SASE with the date of death and name of
individual to:
St. Joseph County Public Library
Local History Department
304 South Main Street
South Bend, IN 46601
There are also some volunteers who will do these lookups for you but whose
URL I do not have handy. They don't charge anything unless they are charged for
the efforts.
Good Luck

Kim:
Thanks. I have found the necrology list and found George Smith on it. Now I
just need his death certificate and obituary, which I am sending for today.
Thanks, again!

Nancy with the tooth problem researches in the St. Joe County libraries. She
will have to answer for those libraries.
I live in Elkhart County (next door to St.Joe) and the Elkhart Public
Library has some offerings for St. Joseph County. The ones I have found so
far are:
Goodspeed's "Pictorial and Biographical Memoirs of Elkhart and St. Joseph
Co" publ. in 1893.
"Vital Statistics - an index to St. Joseph Co. Newspapers, 1831 - 1912"
compiled by Eisen
several volumes of the cemetery listings for St. Joseph Co. by the St.
Joseph Genealogical Society
1910 census and index to the census
"History of St. Joseph Co, IN" by Timothy Edward Howard which was publ. in
1907
IGI (International Genealogical Index) microfiche version
"History of St. Joseph Co." (Indiana) by Chas. C. Chapman & Co. 1880
This list of sources is offered so folks will know the types of information
available on the local level. I have done some lookups in the past, but am
not currently taking on any additional work. The surname list I share
operating with another cousin takes most my time and at present have little
time to do any research of my own.
Thanks for understanding.

Hi Everyone,
I wrote Saturday that I had a dental problem so anyone waiting for a lookup
from me would have to wait until Monday. Well this problem had become worse
and I won't be able to get back with anyone for at least a week. I am sorry if
this inconvieniances anyone but, it can't be helped. I will get back with you
just as soon as I can and I wanted to let you know what was going on. Again
sorry for the delay.
Nancy

In Michigan; Cass and Berrien. Also counties of Greater Michiana. In Indiana; Fulton, Marshall, Porter, LaGrange, Noble, Kosciusko . In Michigan; Van Buren.
