Stephanie,
I like the regulations in Michigan much better! They state that a
birth certificate can be requested by any heir (i.e., after death),
which is defined as any living descendant! I have requested and
received a birth certificate for a great uncle without a problem.
Perhaps the citizens of Indiana can lobby for this small change in
the state's regulations.

Jim,
I don't know what the deal is with my county. You are about the third person
to complain about this problem recently. I am going to investigate this Monday
morning myself as I live right here. In the meantime I would be happy to see
if the marriage you are looking for is in the vital records book at the
library on Monday also.

Stephanie,
Ain't that the truth! My great grandfather's birth certificate lists
his mother as SWEENEY, while on his Social Security Application, my
great grandfather entered SWEAZEY (His wife was the
informant). The death certificate for my great grandmother had her
name listed as GARAY while here social security application showed it
spelled GAREY. Her death certificate stated Michigan as place of
birth (REAL HELPFUL) and listed NO parents names. I wasted time and
money searching GARAY with the State of Michigan (at $13 unrefundable
dollars a search!). To me, death certificates are fine for supporting
information, but I will no longer use them to set a focus for my
search.
Well, good luck with your searching and I hope we can find out why
St. Joseph County is so protective of their records!
Jim
P.S. Where do you live in Indianapolis. I used to live off Georgetown
road north of Lafayette Square on the near northwest side of town. I
worked for Eli Lilly.

Nancy,
I would really appreciate it if you could;
1) find out why they don't want to release birth certificates
for people born over 100 years ago, and
2) take a look-see for that marriage. It would be a great help!
Thanks for the offer and giving a "shoulder to cry on."

I have just recently discovered a connection in South Bend, Indiana
and sent off a request for a birth certificate for the year 1891. I
received my letter back with a written notation that "we issue no
birth record on anyone who is deceased." Now, how do genealogists
function in Indiana?
Perhaps I asked the question incorrectly? I asked for a birth
certificate. In Michigan, it is simply to get a certified birth
certificate for a deceased person, and many counties will even issue
a genealogical copy for a smaller fee.
I also asked for information on obtaining information on a marriage
license (mid 1800s) and was directed to microfilm from GSU or FHC. I
know that the state has a pre-1850 searchable database on line, but
what I need is several years past that time. As a last (expensive)
resort, the State of Michigan will provide copies of birth, death,
marriage and divorce from about 1870 onward. From the info that St.
Joseph county sent, that is not an option with Indiana.
So, I guess I am just venting my frustration and wondering how
people do genealogical research "long distance" with Indiana? BTW, I
lived in Indianapolis for 10 years and my daughter was born there, so
I consider myself part Hoosier.
And lastly, if anyone has access to a marriage index for Indiana/St.
Joseph county, I would appreciate a look-up for JAMES M. ROOF (born
in Indiana) and ELLA M. SWEAZEY (born in Ohio), married in 1877
according to the 1900 census. I sure would appreciate the assistance.

The St. Joseph County Library has a couple of books that index Cedar Grove
Cemetery. I have found them useful but, not all the graves are indexed but, a
lot of them are.
Have you tried the State of Michigan for your death record? I live in
Emmet county which is right next to Charlevoix county and I have found that
writing to the state has better results in Michigan. State records go back
to 1867 and seem to be more complete.
Also, if he died at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, (which is close
to Boyne City) his record will be in Emmet county so you could look there
too.
If your interested Emmet County Genealogical Society has a very good
website and I can send you the address.

Kim,
It never ceases to amaze me how a different person will look at a
problem and see a completely different solution. While I can plead
lack of time for not sending to the state for his death certificate,
I had not even thought of Petosky and its hospitals. I was born in
Sault Ste. Marie and know that many people went to Petosky for
special treatment they couldn't get in the Sault but I didn't bring
this knowledge over to my genealogical investigation. Thank you for
pointing it out.
My problem with applying to the state is that I don't have any idea
of when he died. It cost extra for searching extra years and I
haven't a clue where to start.
Please send the website address for Emmet County Genealogical
Society. Every clue is worth investigating.
Again, thank you so much for taking the time to help. It is really
appreciated!

Cemetery records for the county have been compiled by the genealogical
society. The records are divided into four volumes so if you know the
approximate area of the county where your 'kin' lived, you can check that
particular volume which has all names from that volume indexed.
Now you only have to find someone that has those volumes. Perhaps they are
offered on the lookups section of the St. Joseph Co. GenWeb site.

I am thinking of driving to Mishawaka/South Bend-41/2 hr. drive from
Louisville,KY, to lookup info on my half-brother&half-sister.Can I get info.
on my fathers marriage in 1956, in Mishawaka ? Also, can I find his divorce
record? And hopefully his ex-wife's new marriage cert.? The man she married
adopted the kids, so if I can get HIS last name, I have their last name. Then
maybe I can find them. Is this info available in Mishawaka or South Bend?
Should I make the drive or just write & call for info? Any help I get would be
appreciated.

Hi There,
Cedar Grove Cemetery is on the gound of Notre Dame.
The sexton is very helpful, I would write him a letter and I am sure he
would be helpful.
Rag
Mr. Maki,
I was able to do an 1860 census lookup and discovered the following
about
James Roof and his family:
City: South Bend Township: Warren Census Page: 0389
Name Age Birth Place
Occupation Personal Property Real Property Dwelling #
James Roof 6 Indiana
School
667
John Roof 50 Ohio
Gunsmith
$50 665
John Roof 25 Indiana
Farmer
$0 665
Susannah E. Roof 19 Indiana
Domestic
$0 667
William E. Roof 10 Indiana
School
$0 667
Wm. Roof 46 Ohio
Farmer $150 $500
667
This search includes all people named Roof in St. Joseph County.
I notice there does not appear to be an adult female in either home
(dwelling # 665 and 667)
Hope this helps.

The IN State Library provides a great searchable database for marriages in
Indiana up to 1850. From that database, I found the following information.
Hope it helps.
