I'm hardly an authority on Starke Co, IN history & genealogy any longer, if I ever
were that
[though I was born there (Center Twp) and raised there (Knox) a thousand or so years ago].
You've likely already checked out these resources, Rick; but just in case not, try:
* "Find A Grave" at
www.findagrave.com/ . On right side of page, click on
"Search 30 million
grave records" =or= on "Search by cemetery". At next page for each/either,
fill in what you
know. It'll then take you to Oak Grove Cemetery where you'll find entries for your
three
ancestors =plus= Jeremiah's wife Margaret J (1863-1936)....=plus= photos of their
headstones. It
appears that your Abraham served in the Civil War with Co K, 194th Ohio Volunteer Infantry
Regiment.
* Starke Co Historical Society at
www.starkehistory.com/ has links to the separate
(though
likely with many common members) Starke Co Genealogical Society and to the county public
library, as well as to Marvin Allen, the County Historian .
** I suspect that either/both Societies would do some local research for you at a
very
nominal fee.
** The "Indiana Room" at the Henry F. Schricker Library in Knox is a fine
cache of hist/gen
resources. Long ago and possibly into 1980 or so, Starke Co had two weekly newspapers --
Starke
Co Republican and S.. C.. Democrat. I don't recall when those papers were started nor
whether
all of the earliest years are microfiched, but I've successfully searched through
hundreds of
the 1920s and later fiches for info on my family. These newspapers were =very wonderfully=
home'sy/folk'sy. One can honestly even read who your grandparents entertained for
Sunday
dinner -- =IF= someone simply bothered to tell the 'local reporter'. And even when
there was no
"formal obituary" written by someone, my experience has been that there was
always at least a
notice of the death I was looking for.
* At the County Health Dept (where I suspect you've already searched in vain for
death
certificates, I've also found there to be great big, dusty log books containing some
death info
on county residents. Where I found there to be no death certificates at the Health Dept, I
=DID=
find 1926 & '28 entries in the Health Dept log books for two folks I was searching
out. I can
only suggest, if you haven't already, that you call the Health Dept at 574-772-9174
(Vital Rcds)
to learn whether they have 'death log books' for the years you care about.
Good luck, Rick; and don't give up. There is some more info out there somewhere; and
someone can
help you find it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this particular dilemma?
I have three ancestors who migrated...to Starke County IN around 1880...lived in the
Center and
Knox areas of the County...until the time they died...all buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery
just
outside of Knox along with others from the area of Ohio in which they came...
There is no record of their death in terms of death certificates and no reference to their
deaths in the newspapers. Is it just bad luck on my part or coincidence that I can find no
information on their deaths or is this a common occurrence in Starke County?
Abraham Wilson, died 2/2/1908
Mary Wilson, died 2/10/1915
Jeremiah (Jerry) H. Brickles, died 1929
Any advice on where I should look next?
