Hi Again Deb,
It's me, Marilyn. Forgot to reply to this letter the other day. I am curious
about the author of the History of Starke County.........J.N. McCormick.
Another one of my many surnames from LaPorte County. But this is on another
side. I cannot seem to find any info on a John McCormick born 1862 LaPorte-
Mother Bridget Ryan, brother to my g.g. grandfather Michael J. McCormick
(mother Margaret Unknown). Michael also had a son John McCormick (mother
Marcella Quinn) born 7/24/1888 LaPorte that I cannot find him either. There
is also another John McCormick (1815-1883) buried at Pine Lake Cemetary,
LaPorte, that I thought was Michaels' father. The stone has a civil war
marker and the state tells me that my John would have been too old to join the
civil war and that it's probably a mistake. Although, from my research and
the location of the grave to my g. g. grandfathers (it's four graves to the
left of Michaels) I am somehow convinced that this was my g.g.g.grandfathers
grave.
Any background on this author?
Marilyn

I'll try and answer your questions
we only have one river, and great farm land along the river-the Kankakee
1920 census may help, do you have access ?
our death index goes only to 1938 but you can ask at the-- Health Dept
Ist Floor, Starke Co. Courthouse,Knox ,In,46534 phone 219-772-9137 -they
charge $10.00 for death certificates and be sure to ask for ALL
information since our county death certificates just gives name, date of
death, not very much when it's wanted for genealogy
Knox is the county seat-tax records will be in treasurers office
obits- we do not have an index now but the local library is just
beginning a project to index the newspapers so that will be available
later on
our local genealogy group has started a cemetery listing project, a few
small cemeterys are done but all info has to go into a database,so
again,will be available later
a chance that having come from Chicago and the river connection he may
have been in the Englih Lake area, west of knox a few miles, near North
Judson, this is a pattern that has been followed in the past, at an older
age as he was he must have had someone here he knew, if he was in that
area the North Judson library has the obits for their newspaper on
computer with an index, you could send your names and aprox times and
they will probably check for you, this area also borders LaPorte county
so he may have known someone across the river and that would be LaPorte
co.
I don't know about voting records but know someone who will know and will
ask
there is a Standard History of Starke County, In by J.N. McCormick that
can give you some general info, not sure there would be alot to help,it
was put out in 1915 or 1918 so he's not in there
hope this at least gets you going in the right direction,Good Luck, any
other questions just ask
also saw a note to you to check social security, I have the cd with the
index so would be happy to look that up,just send me the info, once you
get a social security number you can send for a copy of their file, it
has the information they filled out themselves when they applied for a
social security card, good source if they lived a long life and collected
a social security check >>
