most of the census had not been indexed. I would say the only about 1/3 1850
census was indexed, and we weren't even permitted to see the 1870 and 1880
census, much less the soundex. We all struggled through, however. How I
dreaded reading the several reels of Syracuse NY to just see if any of the
family happened to have lived there ...
thank goodness I was fortunate enough to live in a county where there was a
local library with a microfilm reader and a willingness to borrow the film.
(50 cents a reel rental at that time)
