Obituary of George L. Byer, printed in The Leader on July 8, 1987:
George L. Byer, 77, of Knox, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 1987, at his home. He was a
retired brick mason and owner of Byer's Bait Shop at Bass Lake. He was born on July
15, 1909, in Knox and was a lifetime area resident. He was a member of the Bass Lake
Lions Club, Lodge 807 of the Order of the Moose, of which he was a past governor, and
Potawatomi Legion of the Moose.
On May 22, 1937, in Greentown, Indiana, he married Laura Stipp, who survives.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Pat of Knox; three sons, George Jr. of Knox, Bill
of GlenEllyn, Illinois; James of Ohio; seven grandchildren; one greatgrandchild, four
sisters, Inez Byer and Dollie Taylor both of Knox; June Martin of California; three
brothers, Sandy, Howard and Carl all of Knox.
Services were held Thursday, July 2, 1987, at Braman and Son Memorial Chapel, where a
Order of the Moose memorial service was conducted. Burial was at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Starke County Home Health Services. Local
arrangements were made by Braman and Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.
