Donna,
I am conducting research on the 42nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry and I am searching for
information on a William C. Jackson (dob 1838
or 1837). I believe that he is related to this same Jackson family from Fulda, In
(Spencer Co.) William C. Jackson was a member of
the 42nd Indiana and was killed at the battle of Perryville, KY (also sometimes referred
to as Chaplin Hills), on October 8, 1862,
while "raising the flag of regiment in front of the enemy." I also have reason
to believe that the Grand Army of the Republic
(G.A.R.) Post # 332, Dale IN (Spencer Co.) was named after him. My Great Great
Grandfather, William Schwartz, was a member of the
42nd Indiana and was also a past commander of the William C. Jackson GAR Post in Dale,
IN.
William C. Jackson is buried in the Jackson family plot in Fulda and has a military stone
marking his grave. This plot is located
behind St. Boniface Catholic Church and is adjacent to the Catholic Cemetery there. I was
told by the caretaker of this cemetery
that the Jackson family donated the land that the church and cemetery now occupies. Your
e-mail confirms this. I was also told
that the Jackson family plot was separated from the rest of the larger Catholic cemetery
presumably because they were not Catholic.
Given the information you supplied and looking at the Spencer County Cemetery Inscriptions
book, Vol. III, page 128, I find 6
Jacksons (Including William C.) buried in their family plot. I find Milton and what
appears to be maybe his five children?
Interesting enough, I do not see Milton's wife, Jane, listed here. I do find Jane
listed in this same book (page 96)as being buried
in Tableman Cemetery (Spencer Co., Clay Township) with the dob matching up. Her stone
inscription reads "w/o Milton" Is this
Milton's wife?
I am searching for William's DOB, parents names, and wife and children's name, if
he had any. I am also searching for any pictures
of William. Did William have any other family members who fought in the Civil War? I
have a digital photograph of William's grave
stone, if you are interested.
Donna, any information you can give me on William C. Jackson and his family would be much
appreciated.

Subject: JACKSON, Spencer Co., Indiana, 1815-1890
Searching for any information on the family of Milton JACKSON (born
04 Aug
1804, died 07 Sep 1886). The family moved to Carter Township, Spencer Co.,
Indiana from Kentucky in 1815. Milton's mother died in 1818 from "Milk
Sickness." Milton's father ("Elder" JACKSON) married three times
afterwards and was the father of fifty children. "Elder" JACKSON
eventually moved to Cass County, Illinois, and died about 1846.
Milton JACKSON married (17 Dec 1829) Jane SUMNER (b. 26 Jan 1811) the
daughter of Thomas SUMNER and Nancy GEARE. Milton founded the town of
Fulda, Spencer, IN.
Milton's brother John G. JACKSON (b. c1802) married 21 Jan 1822 Catherine
LAMAR (b. c1806), had son Milton JACKSON (b. c1821) married Margaret
"Peggy" HARRIS.
Milton's brother Jonathan (b. 01 Apr 1811) married 13 May 1832 Lillah GEAR
(b. c1804), had son Thomas William/William Thomas JACKSON (b. c1831)
married 15 Apr 1861 Elizabeth STEINS (b. 15 Sep 1843), and served in Co. B,
145th Ind. Inf.
Are these Milton's relatives?
John M. JACKSON -- lived on a farm in Perry Co., near Huffman, Indiana.
Charles JACKSON -- operated a store one mile south of Fulda, Spencer, IN.
I have a book about seven generations of this family, will look up info.
Would like to hear from anyone who has JACKSON ancestors in Spencer, Perry,
or Warrick counties in Indiana.
