Peggy,
I live in Spencer Co. and my family has been here since 1820. Can I help
you. What family are you researching? I gave info to Marsha about Spencer
Co. being Perry Co. at that time and I have all the books of this county.

Subject: Re: Thomas Ellis and record search
Marsha Buck was asking about records in Spencer Co. Well, asking
about
the
book, History of Warrick, Spencer and Perry Counties Indiana.
Marsha, I'm working on my own line in Spencer County and thought I would
pass
this along. I have some copies of items I found in the Spencer
County
Court
House on my families. I was there probably ten years ago and due to
circumstances am only now going through them and recording them in my
computer.
The
point of this is, in Spencer Co. they have records of land purchases
made
early
on in Statehood. Here following is a quote: Jonathan Overlin of
Spencer
County, Indiana has deposited in the General Land Office of the United
States a
certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Vincennes (IN), has
deposited
in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate of the
Register
of the Land Office at Vincennes whereby it appears that full payment
has
been
made by the said Jonathan Overlin according to the provisions of the
act
of
Congress of the 24 of April 1820 entitled an act making further
provision
for
the sale of the public lands for the South East quarter of the South
East
quarter of Section twenty four in Township Seven South of range Eight
West in the
District of Lands subject to sale at Vincennes Indiana....
There is more but this gives you an idea. This was recorded in 1856, but
as
you can see, the sale or purchase took place in 1820, and Spencer
became a
county in 1818. It looks like I made typos by repeating parts of
sentences but
that is how it reads. I think township seven is Luce Township.
So what I'm saying is, you might be able to find records in the court
house
of your ancestors. I went there and hope to go there again (I'm
in
Calif.) but
you can join the Spencer County Historical Society for ten dollars a
year
and
you can get someone to look things up for you and they don't
charge a lot.
I
don't know if you have to belong to the Society, probably not,
just
thought
I'd throw that in.
