Nell Mann is asking about the Erskins', Newman's, and James brings in info on
Harp's. This is very intriguing.
I'm looking at Spencer County Cemeteries surname index published by Heritage
House in 1975. I don't have all the cemetery books, only the ones that
seemed to have my families. The individual volumes I have were produced by
Young, Smith & Hyde and also published by Heritage House. I have volumes 1,
3, 4, 9. I was told by someone at the Spencer Co. Genealogical Society that
the Society has recently printed new cemetery guides. I don't have them.
In the surname guide I mentioned above, I show no Erskines; Newman in Vol.
7 and 13; Harp in Vol. 5.
Just to look further, I checked my Spencer Co. Marriages 1818-1855 and found
the following:
John HARP married Cecelia MASTERSON on January 4, 1846, officiated by
Masterson HARRIS. (yes, that's what it says).
Joel NEWMAN married Mary Ann GREATHOUSE July 21, 1841. It says "license, no
return". Which means they took out the license but never brought it back
with the officiant's signature. (There were quite a few with that note.
Possibly it wasn't explained to these people to bring them back.)
I hope this helps. If I can look up anything else in these books, just ask.
