SOME BACKGROUND WE THINK MIGHT COULD BE LINKED TO JUDGE DANIEL GRASS:
Michael Grass, Jacob Grass & Ludwig Grass arrive in 1752 on the ship
Halifax. On the same ship was Hans Nicholas Quirin [John Nicholas Query]
grandfather of Solomon Query m Henry Grass' dau, Elizabeth Hardin Co Ky
1811. Michael Grass is a Loyalist moved to Kingston Ontario, well
documented. Several Jacob Grass', Ludwig disappears. So who was Daniel
Grass' father?
I have no information on Ludwig Grass other than his arrival in America in
1752. He seems to have disappeared, but perhaps changed his name? On the
same ship, Halifax, Hans Nickel Quirin (later became John Nicholas Query)
was a passenger. In 1811, Solomon Query, grandson of John Nicholas Query,
married Elizabeth Grass, daughter of Henry Grass in Hardin Co. KY. It seemed
an interesting coincidence and I was hoping there might be a Grass
connection. Thanks for the information on Michael Grass associated with
Kingston, Ontario. Is this the same Michael Grass that arrived in
Philadelphia in 1752? I found references to a Michael Graff, born 1675, died
in Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co. PA in 1760, father's name Marx. Also a
Michael Graff born in 1707, died 1771, who married Elizabeth Herr (probably
in same area of PA) And the Johann Michael Graff who married Susanna
Margaretha Quirin in Alsace region of France in 1735 is another possible
candidate to be this 1752 emigrant. This Michael Graff who married a Quirin
is of particular interest, as I am a descendant of Hans Nickel Quirin (later
Query) who arrived on the same boat as Michael Grass in 1752. In the Grass
line, I am looking for family of Henry Grass who married Mary Gray in
Lincoln Co. KY in 1783; they are my ggggg grandparents. There were numerous
Graff/Grass families in early Berks Co. PA and I have a notation of a
biographical sketch of a Jacob Grass in Cumerland Co. PA annals. Again,
thanks for your interest and help. Irene

snickers_rus(a)yahoo.com May 15, 2003 7:24 AM Sheri, I found this in a listing
of graves in Pleasant Grove Cemetery Morgan Twp Owen County (very old but
lovely cemetery): Elizabeth (Grass) Query b. 1792 d. 19 Jan 1866 wife of
Solomon Query, died 1866 but buried elsewhere. Son of S and E (Grass) Query:
Daniel b. 22 Mar 1819 d. 17 Dec 1901 wife Susannah (Cox) Query buried in
unmarked grave both also at Pleasant Grove Cemetery Could this possibly be
sister or other relative of James William Grass? I have been to these graves
but did not know the Grass connection until I saw this listing. In an area
fenced in with old black iron fencing are several very old Query graves. all
children of Hardin Query b. 1824 d. May 1876, wife Ruth Ann (Cassida) Query
b. 23 Jul 1851 d 30 Nov 1878. We have many Cassida's in the closet but this
one I think is a child to Isaac Cassida brother (name ?). There are 9
children's graves here (not including the Grass/Query graves) all ranging
from 1 day old to 13 yrs old but deaths all in different years. Strange
isn't it? and a tragedy for that poor woman. Spent most of her live pregnant
and out lived by 2 yrs only one child. Been connecting very well with Jeff
and Connie Jordan, sending her lots of info. Thanks for the hook up. Turns
out Jeff's grandfather was cousin to Jim's dad and we know Jeff's
grandmother very well. Jim goes to see her from time to time. Got this
cemetery info thru Connie. Hey talk to you again soon. take care Alyce

I have done extensive research on the Jacob GRASS who settled in Augusta
Co., VA by 1769. He had grown children by the Rev. War times, so must have
been born ca. 1720-25ish. I had thought that he might have been the one who
immigrated in 1752 with Ludwig and Michael GRASS, but don't know where that
Jacob settled. Can any one help with that? I need to know so that I can
either rule that one out or do further research on him to see if he could be
our Jacob. Dolores Rutherford
Jacob Grass probable brother to Michael and Ludwig Grass (more proof is
needed of these three brothers but so far we don't have much) fought in the
Revolutionary war until 1783 where he headed north and Settled in New
Brunswick, Canada. He lived in Burton, Sunbury County, New Brunswick,
Canada. There are many people who are descended from him as he had a lot of
children with his wife Priscilla Mills. Please email me if you would like
more information on this Jacob Grass and his family. Susan Ofeldt
Ms. Ofeldt,According to the information I have the name of the ship was
indeed Neptune. Jacob Grass arrived on the ship on Oct. 4, 1752 with his
wife Anna Catherine Fisher Grass. He was a Tailor. TONY L GRASS

Fr: pacserve(a)bellsouth.net Dick, These are my thoughts on the early Grass
families. There was a lot of immigration from Germany in the late 1600's to
the 1750's. I think our family was part of this. The name in has been
spelled Cress, Graff, Gratz and so on. In some of the land grants that were
given to several Grass Family members in the late 1700's and early 1800's in
Southwestern (on the KY border) part of WV show the name spelled Graff. My
earliest known relative is Jacob Grass (He is my gggggrandfather) who died
in 1789 was in the Staunton, Augusta Co. VA area in the middle to late
1700's. He purchased land from the Patton's in the Beverley Grant. I know
that Patton got a lot of people from Pennsylvania to move and buy property
in the Grant in the 1740's and a later. A lot of the people were second
generation and not very many were recent immigrants. There was a group of
Grass' that did not fight on the American side and they went to Canada from
Pennsylvania. They are well documented. I think we are related to them. I am
certain that their fathers were our relative's fathers. Jacob had 5 children
- Jacob, Mary, Peter, Fredrick and Barbara- that are known. He is listed
several times in the Chaulkley papers. I have a list of some of the Grass'
that served in the Revolutionary War - Jacob, John, Peter, Fredrick and
George. I have records of Jacob, Peter and Fredrick after the War but
nothing on George or John. There are Georges and Johns but none with the
corresponding dates. The family moved from Augusta Co VA to Bath Co VA then
to Kanawha Co WV when it was the size of the southern half of WV and
bordered on Kentucky. The part they lived in is very close to Kentucky. They
moved in family groups so I am thinking that Daniel Grass's parents may have
been part of this group. From there some went to Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
Since there was such a small number of members of the Grass family in the
early days I think they all are related.
