Fr:Gayle Gayle.Alvis(a)kdla.net - 12-26-2002- It is my GUESS that Bardstown
Pike was originally the Louisville to Bardstown Turnpike. It is probably
very close to the current Bardstown Road from Louisville that is US 31E (the
old Dixie Highway East). This is only a supposition from documents I've
found on the internet about Civil War action in that area and other
incidental information from materials in our collection. It passes through
Fern Creek, Mount Washington and on to Bardstown.
[original question]- Does anyone know abt a Bardstown Pike? I am not sure
abt John Ash,thinking he might be related to some of the Ash gals that md
into the Ashby family & Coombs/Combs. Wonder what the name of this stockade
was outside Bardstown? And what was Salem Central ? a town ....and Breshears
or Brashers,

Daniel GRASS m Jane SMEATHERS Daviess County, KY (across the river from
Rockport) and soon after located on land near the present site of Rockport.
He later settled on a farm near the line of the township which now bears his
name. He was a member of the In Legislature, and Judge of the Co Court for a
number of years. He had a dau Elizabeth GRASS b Ky Dec 22 1803. Judge
GRASS's parents were murdered and his sisters captured and killed by the
Indians in Ky. After he was left an orphan, he lived with William R. HYNES
in Nelson Co Ky, and may have come to Spencer Co. to attend to the
possessions of HYNES, who was a large land owner here. Daniel's grandson was
James SMITHERS GREATHOUSE b May 13 1833. I am from Grass Township in Spencer
Co IN--KRAMER and DAWSON families. Kandy Kramer JHarris578(a)aol.com [CANT GET

"Read at Poseyville by Mrs. Galder Erhman, September 28, 1920."
Daniel Grass, lone survivor of his family, who had been killed in Kentucky,
was taken into the home of Dr. William R. Hynes, of Bardstown, Kentucky. He
married Jane Smeathers from the settlement of Yellow Banks and tradition
tells us that he came here in the interest of Dr. Hynes. This seems to be
true because of the various land transactions. On May 9, 1807, Daniel Grass
made the first land entry on the territory where Rockport now stands.
Sometime later he built a log house south of Rockport and moved his family
and became the first permanent settler. He changed the name to Mt. Duvall,
in honor of Col Wm Duvall, a Ky friend. On March 11, 1808, William Berry
bought land on the river below Grass and lived on his houseboat with is
family until a cabin in the woods could be constructed. Daniel Grass later
became the first County Agent and Berry became Judge of the Northwest
Territory.
[is this Berry related to our Berry that md Janes sister, Betsy Smeathers?]

Daniel m Jane Smeathers oldest dau/Bill Smeathers-early 1800's. Only record
