I have to say, I spent 3 or so days at libraries and courthouses in Southern
Ohio trying to find something about my Wilkinson family. My last stop was
the deeds and to my shock I was able to find where my known ancestor John
Wilkinson was deeded land by his loving father James. Never knew John's
father. Also, land was purchased from John Duskey from his daughter and
son-in-law Diana and John Wilkinson. Never knew John's wife's name until
that moment. It was truly emotional and monumental. I guess you had to be
there!

Subject: [INSPENCE] Finding records
Kathie says:
I have heard that sometimes wills have been found in Land Records? Never
found one there yet!
Years ago I did a lot of traveling to counties to look up information. I
have found interesting things in books where the information didn't really
belong. It's like someone said, "I don't have time to find the right book,
or find
out where to put it, so I'll just write it here".
I found a notation of the death of my mom's youngest sister, which occurred
in 1915, in a court record book in Oklahoma. Clearly didn't belong there;
possibly the person knew the family and just wanted to make a note of it
somewhere.
I found an account of a death and burial in another book like that in
Arkansas. Again, you would never to think to look there for it.
On another note: Someone mentioned not all records being filmed. In my
travels to these counties, I was told by clerks in several of them that when
the
ahem! LDS people came with their cameras to film records, they were
rather--well--sloppy. The county clerks said quite a lot about it,
actually, about the
camera operators' inattentiveness to what they were doing and that they
didn't
seem to care if they didn't get all the records. So my conclusion is, if I
don't find it on the films I don't give up; if I can get to the county and
look
it up for myself, that's what I do.
