Joe Anne,
I have what I belive to be James & Lucy Abshiers kids as listed in the 1850
census and Jame's Last Will & Testament. It appears to me that there are
two groups of Abshiers that live side by side but different house holds.
The following is who I have found to be James & Lucy's kids:
MARY ABSHIRE, b. 1831
Mary was listed in the U.S. Census 1880 as a Widow
I have a list of her kids too.
JACOB (JACKSON) ABSHIER, b. Abt. 1820; d. Bet. 1850 - 1934
He married MINERVA JANE HERALD September 15, 1844 in Spencer County,
IN. She was born 1829 in Indiana, and died Bet. 1850 - 1934
In the 1850 U.S. Census the following people were listed as
belonging to the Abshier household. House hold # 830 page 60B.
James Abshier, age 90, male, born in NC. Lucy Abshier, age 66,
female, born in NC. There is a man by the name of
Jackson Abshire, age 26, male, its listed that he was a farmer and
he was born in Indiana. Jackson is listed as head of house hold. His age
is in the range to be Minerva J. husband (Jacob) not for sure though.
Also Elizabeth Abshier is listed there, age 38, female, white and
born in IN. We dont know where she belongs. Tilford Abshier is also
listed in the house hold. Age 40, male, a Farmer, born in KY.
Mariage records showes a Jackson Abshear and a Menerva Jane Herald
was married on Sept. 15, 1844.
I have all of their kids as well if you woud like them.
The only Nancy I know of is Nancy Garrett who got a marriage licended on
July 17, 1827 but there isnt any record of the marriage being performed.
She was to marry Alfred Abshier. That is all I have for them.
Let me know if you would like to go further or if you have anythign on the
Abshiers you would like to send......All would be greatly appreachaited.
Thanks,
Isaac

Isaac,
Do you have as one of their kids a Nancy? What children do you have?

Thank you to all who responded to my inquiry about Abshiers, Powells and
Shoptaughs in Spencer. I sent that email out right before I left for a
trip, and now I'm going to be gone until after Thanksgiving, so I'm not at
home to check my files and respond properly. I should have waited until I
was back home before sending that inquiry, but I really didn't expect such
prompt and encouraging responses!
But briefly, (and from memory), the people I'm most interested in are the
parents of Nancy Abshier Shoptaugh. (Nancy is married to Henry Shoptaugh -
their daughter, Caroline Shoptaugh is our gggrandmother - she married Alford
Powell).
Nancy Shoptaugh's mother is Lucy, father James Abshier, both born in North
Carolina.
The LDS family search brought up the marriage of James Abshier and Lucy
Critchlow - I'm guessing these are the parents of Nancy Abshier Shoptaugh.
I've found lots of info on Abshires in Virginia and Critchlows in North
Carolina, but I just can't find proof that these are the same lineage as the
Spencer County Abshiers /Lucy Critchlow.
Again, thanks for your help so far.
Jerry
