Possibly a notation could be put on the county website under a subject area "Migration To and From Spencer Co IN" or "Where did my people go when they left Spencer Co IN?"
My husband's Geer family left Spencer Co IN about 1855/1856 and moved to Dunklin Co MO settling in the Campbell area. For some years we had thought it was only his gr-gr-grandparents, his father with his 2nd family and a brother and his family. However, within the past year I have found that some of the sisters made the move too. Sadly because of this some who could have provided some key information on the family are now gone but the opportunity was there should we have known about their relationship.
Within the past week I learned that some of Lamar family also moved to nearby Mississippi Co MO. My husband's gr-gr-gr-grandmother Geer was a Lamar girl, so there were other relatives too in SE Missouri however they came some years later.
My husband's gr-gr-gr-grandfather made the move because of the government under President Buchanan offered land as a payment for service in the Mexican War. The land was in areas which needed to be settled and thus why the move to Dunklin Co MO which had only been formed in 1845.
So if you lost someone, check out the land patents to see if possibly your people took advantage of the offerings by the US Government.
