Francis Marion was a Revolutionary guerilla in South Carolina, known
as the Swamp Fox by the British. He seems to have caught the popular
imagination, because literally thousands of boys through the 19th
Century were named for him, or for ancestors named for him. The same
happened with Lorenzo Dow, a charismatic frontier preacher after the
Revolution. I've got several of each in my trees.
