So the SAWIN connections to Jackson Twp, Shelby Co, IN, would be those of
physical happenstance and not related to relationships in prior locations?
The Primitive Baptist connection is very interesting. I'm trying to get
church/faith histories online, so any information you can offer will be much
appreciated.

Subject: Re: [INSHELBY] SAWIN vs SWAIN
Phyllis… I need to correct what was written on the Sawin surname.
I believe that there is only one Sawin family buried at St. George's and
thus showing them being Lutheran. A good portion of the those with the
Sawin
surname can be traced to the James Harvey Sawin (29 APR 1802 - 17 APR 1872)
family, who are buried at Shepherd Cemetery in Jackson Twp. I wondered why
this was and am slowly finding out that the Sawin's were actually Primitive
Baptist and might have belonged to Lewis Creek Baptist Church as noted in
the
book entitled "Primitive or Old School Baptist Ministers." This books notes
Elders Isaac, John G., and P. W. Sawin, were brothers and that their parents
(James H. and Caroline [Harvey] Sawin) "were members of the Old School
order." James H. Sawin's parents, Isaac (1776 - 1853) and Martha/Lottie (
Wheat) Sawin and family might have stopped in Shelby and Bartholomew
Counties
(conjecture) but continued on with several of his to Adams Co., Illinois.
Dates for Caroline (Harvey) Sawin are 23 SEP 1808 - OCT 1905 and for
Martha/Lottie (Wheat) Sawin are 28 JAN 1777 - 2 SEP 1854 with a Mayflower
Descendant Number of 75803.
The Sawin surname can be traced back to Boxford, Co. Suffolk, England,
thus not German and has been noted in several books including "Sawin:
Summary
Notes Concerning John Sawin, and his Posterity" Sawin, Thomas E.; Rufas E.
Putnam, printer; 1867. My Sawin line starts out in Watertown, Middlesex Co.,
Massachusetts about 1650, removing to Willington, Tolland Co., Connecticut
removing to Berne, Albany Co., New York removing to Jackson Twp., Shelby
Co.,
Indiana (and then some removing to Adams Co., Illinois).
The Snepps (another major line for me) also came to the same area of
Jackson Twp. They were German/Lutheran and did stop in Montgomery Co., Ohio
on their way from Berks Co., Pennsylvania.
To the best of my knowledge, the names of Sawin and Swain are not
related
though there is great potential for error on transcriptionist to transpose
two letters.
Also, to the best of my knowledge, all of the information stated above is
correct and factual I pray. If there are any corrections, I ask that I be
contacted.
Sincerely,
Bruce Greene
