I'm not saying these two families were never connected, but ...
The SAWINs are from a distinct group of German/Lutherans that settled in the
far southwestern corner of Shelby Co, northwestern Bartholomew Co and
western Johnson Co. Most of the families came straight from Germany with a
short stop in southern OH. The farms in the area are still immaculate;
cattle-breeding has always been popular; the stone and brick bases of the
barns built 150 years ago are remarkable. Bruce Greene can fill you in on
the details.
The SWAINS are from an equally distinct group of English/Friends that
settled on the far eastern edge of Shelby Co, literally on the Rush Co
border. The families came from Franklin/Union Co IN about 1840. Prior to
that, they lived in NC (present-day Durham), arriving there about 1790 from
Nantuckett Is, where they settled after leaving England. They were whalers
in Nantuckett; merchant/farmers after they left the sea. I have a great
deal of SWAIN information.

I am curious. Is Sawin another spelling for Swain?
