Hello Ron,
I work for Ye Olde Genealogie Shoppe in Wanamaker, IN. When I was preparing
a census abstraction form for the 1930 federal census, I spoke with the
National Archives in Washington D. C. several times. My question was about
which was asked on the census,
A. Do you OWN a farm?
B. Do you LIVE on a farm?
or C. Do you RENT your farm?
I had found all 3 questions on different source material. (BTW- A. Do you
OWN a farm? is the correct question)
While talking to them I too asked about the radio question. Their answer was
that the government wanted to know how much of the population could be
alerted to air raid, bomb threats, chemical attacks etc.

Subject: [INSHELBY] got a radio in that house?
Does anybody know why the government asked about radios in the house
in
the 1930 census? I realize they were something of a novelty at that time,
but the government usually had a purpo$e or $pecific rea$on for a$king about
$omething like that. Were they proposing some kind of new federal tax on
them as a source of income during the early days of the Depression?
