The lister’s description is:
(note: I have no affiliation with the listing)
“This is an 1861 Civil War Era Bible. 171st Edition. New York American Bible Society.
It is leather bound and in good condition for its age.
I have been told that this size was a "Field Bible" to be carried in a
knapsack; it seems to have belonged to Kate Adams as her name is located several times
throughout the book, so I am not sure that it would have belonged to a soldier although
the dates are right. It would appear that the family was from Shelby county in Indiana.
The page with the title and copyright date are not in the book any longer however I found
an identical one listed on eBay with even the same imprinted design on the cover and the
pages that were displayed matched up exactly. This is what I am basing the copyright date
on. It has both the Old and New Testament.
There is a family record inside with births and deaths listed; births range from
1839-1873 and deaths range from 1859-1872. One child was around 4 years old when he died
and one was just a year old. It paints a picture of how difficult life could be in that
time period. If this Bible could talk it would have an immense amount of stories to tell.
Although it's in a weathered condition it has a lovely patina to the aged leather
cover. The binding isn't tight as it would be new however it is still intact with no
loose leaf pages floating around.
The bible measures 4 1/2" wide x 7" long x 1 1/2" thick. Wonderful
historic Bible to add to your collection.”
