I believe your Thelma Tolen is in our family even though I had no marriage for her. She
was the daughter of Ulysses P. Tolen and Blanche Opal (Kanouse) Tolen . Thelma was born in
1904 . Her father was b. abt. 1878 at St. Louis Crossing, Bartholomew Co. Indiana and
died in 1907 in Shelbyville. He was buried at Forest Hill and had a small headstone.
Thelma filed for and received his military pension in 1919 (age 15) after Blanche had
filed for them in 1907 and later. St. Louis X-ing is a very small village on the RR
in Flat Rock Twp. Blanche was the eldest daughter of Lucinda (Barmore) Chesser and Joseph
Kanouse. Lucinda Chesser 1844-1908 married Joseph Kanouse of Marietta, Hendricks Twp.
Shelby Co. IN in 1878 after the death of her first husband George W. Chesser 1840-1872
who she had married in 1862. Three children were born to that union and all lived to
adulthood, married and had children. But t he Chesser children, Isephenia m. James L.
Ross, Ira, and William are not listed in the 1880 Census. O nly Joseph, Lucinda, Della
(infant) and Joseph's older children (Lewis, Letitia, and Stephen Douglas Kanouse)
from his previous marriage to Angeline Shaner, are listed. Blanche O. (Kanouse) Critser
was b. 07 Spr 1884 and d. 01 Feb 1956. Her youngest sister Rosa S. (Kanouse) Nelis was
b. 05 Jun 1887 and d. 11 Mar 1912. She married Samuel Thomas Nelis as his second wife. S.
T. Nelis was b. 05 May 1860 and d. 24 Jan 1913. They married 25 Dec 1906 and had a
daughter Roberta Nelis b. 08 Mar 1909.

Deborah. I believe he was actually from Greensburg, which is Decatur county, next door to
Shelby county. He can first be found in the 1910 census for Decatur county, Washington
township, Dist 0012, page 10A, with his parents George W and Mollie E Sanders.I believe
they are the George W Sanders and Mollie E Walkins who married in Decatur county on 1 Sep
1897. George gave his parents as George Sanders and Hester Bruner and Mollie gave her
parents as J Walkins and Bell Millhallen. Hope this helps. Don
