OBITUARIES: March 23, 2004
Orville Lloyd �Popeye� Franklin, 77, of Shelbyville, died Sunday, March 21, 2004.
Born July 28, 1926, in Shelbyville, he was the son of Sherman Franklin and Joyce Fern
(Harbaugh) Riley. He married Ruth Irene Grigsby on Sept. 5, 1946, and she survives.Other
survivors include three sons, Joseph R. Franklin, Stephen L. Franklin and Thomas J.
Franklin, all of Shelbyville; one sister, Hildreth (husband, Elmer) Spencer of
Shelbyville; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by
one daughter, Alfreda Franklin; two brothers, Herbert Franklin and Sherman Franklin Jr.;
and one sister, Mary Joyce Smith.Mr. Franklin was a lifelong Shelbyville resident.He was
employed at Indiana Cash Drawer for 19 years, retiring in 1979. He previously was employed
at Stites Studio for 19 years.Mr. Franklin was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He
received American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, four stars, Philippine Liberation
Ribbon and Victory Medal.He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American
Legion.Visitation will be from 4
to 8 p.m. today at Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, 819 S. Harrison St.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Chaplain Brian
Trotter officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, with military rites
conducted by local service organizations Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice
of Shelby County, 110 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville, IN 46176.
