The METHODIST connection.
Sylvester Thomas and Kalistia Kitchell were married
Feb. 2, 1846 by Rev. Samuel Morrison.
More from the Florence Rock booklet May, 1946.
The Baptist church in Hanover transferred to the
Christian Church and continued holding their services
at Hanover until 1880, when they erected their present
building in Morristown. This building was remodeled
and enlarged a few years ago.
Rev. Thomas Shipp of the Methodist Protestant Church
was an outstanding minister of his day. He moved here
in 1850. A Methodist Protestant class has been
organized at the home of Jasper Hewitt, north of
Hanover, in 1832 or 33 by Samuel Morrison. Due to the
efforts of Rev. Shipp, a building was erected on Main
Street in Morristown. It was the first church in the
town.
The original town of Morristown was laid out in 1828
by Col. Rezin Davis and Rev. Samuel Morrison. ...

By these histories it seems clear that the school
Levi and the Kitchells
started, in a log cabin, was near what became the
Hanover Baptist Ch. and
later a
new church building became the Christian Church. But
neither had anything to
do with the Hanover Cem. Is that how you read it?
I believe there was a church right there by the
cemetery at one time--I've
read something about it somewhere and now can't
remember where. The Christian
Church was a more liberal version of the Baptist
Church, so they are closely
related. What I read in that previous passage was
that they changed from
Baptist to Christian, then later built a new church
in Morristown rather than
Hanover.
There were houses and at least one store in Hanover
at one time. I suppose
with Morristown being so close, it was more
convenient to relocate there as
the town of Hanover died out since Morristown had
stores, churches, bank, etc.
I recall reading that at one time Hanover was quite
a bustling little town.
What the hopes were for a town in those days and
reality were often quite
different things. There were those who thought
Gwynneville was going to be
quite a town too. Of the three, only Morristown has
become a solid little
village, while Gwynneville is barely hanging on and
Hanover is kaput.
