From the main Shelby County IN Gen Web page:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/index.htm
select Courthouse Records (because the originals are in the Recorder's
Office, Courthouse Annex)
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/courthouse/courthouse_records.htm
next, select Land records / deeds (this will take you to the Recorder's
section)
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/courthouse/deeds_mortgages/deed_index.htm.
At the very top of this page, there is a radio button for the Index of
Original Land Purchases
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/courthouse/deeds_mortgages/deed_index.htm.
This is the primary index page for the land records. You can search
alphabetically, by area from your ancestors migrated, or by the area into
which they migrated (bottom table, "Land Purchases, Geographical Area"*).
The alpha search is probably the best start, but once you find your
relatives, familiarizing yourself with the land plats* is a MUST. Knowing
our neighbors is a formality these days, but in 1822, it was survival -- not
to mention that over 50% of the time, neighbors were also relatives. George
and I designed the land plat pages so that you could print the various
sections surrounding your family and build a physical neighborhood.
Let's take CROSBY for instance!
I would look up Crosby on the alpha listing. I see Samuel in 14-7 and
Joseph in 13-6, purchasing about 12 yrs apart (father-son?). Looking at the
map, 14-7 is along the Michigan Road and 13-6 is "inland" and was
opened/settled much later. I also noticed a Samuel Cosby, also from
Hamilton, OH, also buying in the 1820s. I would be extremely suspicious
that this is the same person as Samuel Crosby.
If Samuel or Joseph were my relatives, I would write down the section,
township and range (columns 6, 7, 8) and their residence at time of purchase
if other than Shelby. Then I would go to the top of the page and use the
small blue numeric links under the alpha table to find the land plat for
their purchase. One of Samuel's is "Sec 22, 14N, 7E", so I would click on
"14N7E". This will take me to Samuel's big neighborhood. I see that he
lives just south of Freeport and not far from Morristown and Fountaintown.
And neighbors -- wow! Many of the Shelby Co founders are living right
around him. After taking a few minutes to soak in the big area, I would
click on Section 22 and look at Samuel's immediate neighborhood.
I would print the plat of Section 22 and 23 also, since Samuel's land
adjoins section 23. If I recognized names in any of the adjoining sections,
I would print those and tape them together, making the map as big as
necessary.
Samuel is the only person in Section 22 living in Hamilton County OH at the
time of his purchase. Since he is on the southern edge, I go the links on
the bottom and click adjoining lands south to check for other Hamilton Co
residents -- I find John Haney. I would check my records for a possible
connection. I would also go back to the index page, select the Ohio link
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/courthouse/deeds_mortgages/olo_indexRes...
and search through all the Hamilton County purchasers to see if I see other
relatives or traveling companions.
After I finished with Samuel (and I would include Samuel Cosby), I would
start the process again with Joseph Crosby.
Please let us know if you have other questions, or if you find broken links.
If your ancestors were not original land owners and you aren't sure where
they settled, just ask the list -- I'm sure someone will have an idea.

If you refer to
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/index.htm, can you
tell
us how to find the land records?
