Nobody gives these people permission, they just do it and hope nobody
finds out. I could open a whole new can of worms as to the cemeteries
being destroyed.

Phyllis and all,
I am some what concerned with the thought of folks working with these books if they are
indeed moldy. Is there some form of test that would be economical yet necessary to make
sure that there aren't any cancer causing molds infesting the books, such as black
mold. Seems as if the conditions in that basement are perfect for a breeding ground.

I want to thank all of you for your support and suggestions.
I have contacted the County Commissioners and left messages. The woman who
works in the CC office at the courthouse (317-392-6330; 25 W Polk St,
Shelbyville 46176) told me that as of this morning "nothing has been done."
I don't say that in a condemning way -- obviously a plan (albeit an
immediate one!) needs to be made before just throwing the books somewhere
else.
I have contacted the County Commissioners and left phone messages. It is
appropriate to phone/write them at home (I checked).

I have contacted the Conservation Dept at the Indiana Historical Society and
asked for an appointment/consultation. I left a phone message and an email.
I have copied the mold articles to give to the commissioners. Shelbers, you
may want to read about this -- it was recommended by one of the other
INGenWeb County Coordinators (who happens to have Marion Twp - Brandywine
Twp Shelby County roots!)

Joni Curtis gave another reference on the Shelby mail list last week.
I am fascinated by the Google book search program, but I don't see a direct
way to contact them for help. If someone can explore this, please feel free
to give them my email address.

I have emailed Lisa Felix at INCOLSA. They offer a program for groups
needing to rescue wet and moldy books.
http://www.incolsa.net:80/WebCal/ViewEvent.html?CALid=4633&EventID=2317
The program is $60. If someone is interested in helping to financially
sponsor this program for our genealogical society, please contact Susan
Armstrong, president of our society, sarmstrongjjj(a)yahoo.com
Mounting a grass roots effort to dry the books and scan them would only be
possible if we had a location from which to work. Until the commissioners
contact me, I can't pursue that avenue. If this is possible, I will be
contacting you for donations of time and resources.
Ma Dark contacted the LDS and received a rather canned reply stating they
had already filmed many Shelby County records. I looked at the lists
briefly and I don't see ANY of the books I remember seeing at the old
school. I remember making stacks of township tax records. I took in my
portable copier and got a few pages. Here is a sample:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inshelby/courthouse/aud/assess_1859_hano.htm
Another example of books Melinda and I discovered there was the sale of land
in section 16 of each congressional township. Very detailed. The books
were not from the Clerk's vault or the Recorder's vault. They were from the
Assessor's vault and I would guess the Treasurer's vault. I don't see any
of these on the LDS site.
I emailed two people at the Indiana Commission on Public Records. However,
I don't feel confident that I "got my foot in the door" there. If anyone
has any contacts there or any experience dealing with this agency, please
contact me.
Susan Armstrong made it clear at the Commissioner's Meeting last night that
we can marshall a volunteer staff and that there are grants available for
"disasters" such as this.
Again, I want to thank everyone for the suggestions. Please feel free to
contact the commissioners!
Phyllis
