Phyllis, Yes, by Hoosier standards, why wouldn't we wave or be friendly, but
I have had people here in NY think I'm going out of my way to be nice when
in reality I'm just acting normal as a Hoosier.

Well, they are in my neighborhood. Why wouldn't I wave?

Subject: [INSHELBY] HOOSIER HOSPITALITY
I think it is called HOOSIER HOSPITALITY. I travel for my job all over the
country and being a former Shelbyvillian, I can truly say "There's no
place
like home... there's no place like home".
This country has a lot of nice people but Hoosiers go out of their way to
make strangers feel at home. Where else does everybody you pass on a
country
road wave to strangers as you go past?

To take this a step further, it shows what a great place to live Shelby
County must be, how fortunate we are to have ancestors who actually lived
there,
and how fortunate some are to still live there. Phyllis and Melinda are
representative of what great residents Shelby has.
The other night I was chatting on a website with a lifelong friend who
now
lives far from Shelby County as I do, and someone asked if we were
related.
I
said no, but we've been friends all our lives, our parents grew up
together,
and our grandparents were friends also. Everyone was so taken aback
that
such relationships still exist and commented how wonderful that was.
Then
they
wanted to know WHERE that great place must be. Kudos to the heartland
once
again, especially to Shelby County.
Just one more interesting little story. When my paternal grandmother
died
back in the 40s, one of the cards of condolence received was from a woman
in
Cincinnati. Apparently no one knew who she was until they read her
note.
She
and her family had been travelling from somewhere up north back home and
their car broke down on 52 in Gwynneville. It was summer, and they were
all hot
and tired, not to mention frustrated with their situation while awaiting
repairs to get back on the road. Noticing this car full of rambunctious
children and distraught parents, Grandma took tea, lemonade, and
sandwiches
out to
them and had an impromptu picnic on the front lawn while the work was
completed. This woman never forgot that kindness and somehow learned of
Grandma's
death a few years later.
That's the kind of place Shelby County is, and that shows you why this is
without doubt the best County website---the people. Everyone should be
so
lucky to have had ancestors who lived in Shelby County, Indiana.
Jill
