I will start asking around for a photographer, with the assumption that we
will ultimately have access to at least some of the books.
The state officials were specifically asked about photography and scanning.
State officials told us that microfilm was the only thing they would accept,
that that was the archival standard. I don't pretend to be an archivist or
even claim that I have researched archival methods -- I'm just relating what
was said during our tour of the storage facility.
Color photography sounds wonderful. Whenever I copy old estate papers for
people, I wish they could see them in full color. The old papers are
beautiful. Many have been tightly folded to be carried in boots or hat
bands. If those papers could talk, they could tell us volumes.
Thanks. Keep the suggestions coming.

This sounds like a good idea. But at least 300 dpi color digital
scans or
photographs of the records would ultimately be the most useful to the
county
and researchers.
Black-and-white photographs are good, but not as good. If a record has a
stain, color would allow people with good programs like Photoshop to
process
the image so that the words under the stain would be more readable.
Microfilm quality varies. I've seen some that is fuzzy and unreadable.
That's very frustrating to know that the information is there, but you
just
can't read it because of the poor quality of the filming.
Digital images can be posted on a website easily or e-mailed and the
fragile
documents would not have to be handled again and again and again.
