Dick, am I understanding you to say that Margaret Malvina Smith is listed in
Obediah Meredith's will as a child of Wm and Elizabeth? This is part of the
puzzle. Why is Margaret Malvina not on the censuses with this family? Was
she farmed out to relatives because her mother had died? Kathy

Based on my research, Nancy Jane Smith is the daughter of Elizabeth
Meredith and William Smith. I base this on the will of Obediah V.
Meredith, father of Elizabeth. In part, the will says "It is my will that
the children of Elizabeth [Meredith] Smith, deceased to wit: Sarah
Elizabeth, Obediah William, Nancy Jane, Margaret Malvina ..." The word
"Meredith" between Elizabeth and Smith was added by me. Obediah's will
was
dated 5 January 1866 and was filed in Rush County (Book 3, Page 73).
Obediah is my 3rd great grandfather.

belong to Elizabeth HECK but rather a Wm Smith married to Elizabeth
Meredith. Wm Smith m Elizabeth Heck has a will in the courthouse that
lists completely different children. I just made this change in my
database after our recent trip to Shelbyville. I'm at work but will post
the probate tonight if you'd like. Part of the reason I think Meredith
is
the mother is that Wm Smith and Eliz. Heck were married in 1832. The
first
child in Nancy Jane's family wasn't born until 1842. That's a long time
between marriage and first child. Wm Smith and Eliz. Meredith were married
in February of 1841 in Rush County--better time frame and geographically.
Again, I"m at work but isn't Wm J on a later census? But I do like the
sister in law theory. That would make sense. Kathy
