As the President of the SheIby County Genealogical Society, I would like to clarify
something stated in this email. The Shelby County Genealogical Society would be more
than willing to accept funds for the restoration of the books. In fact, we have already
received $75 to be used for this purpose. The issue with applying for grants to be used
to purchase equipment is another bone. In order to do this, the Society would have to
retain said equipment, which is not what was proposed. We, as a society, worked with
the county Commissioners for over a year, bringing proposal after proposal to the board.
After all that effort, we were not contacted to help in this project.
We are still quite willing to help in any way, within the legal realms of our 503C
status.

I haven't had time to pursue it, so nothing has happened.
We need to collect money, but we do not have a 501K status. I approached
the Shelby County Historical Society and the Shelby County Genealogical
Society, hoping they would set up a collection fund and allow us to apply
for grants under their name.
I found a company that will microfilm the books, even in their moldy state.
The Indiana State Archives and the Indiana State Library will not take them
due to their moldy condition.
I have spent hours on the phone with the LDS, but it has also been
fruitless.
My next step is to talk to the Shelbyville-Shelby County Library and see if
they will let us use their 501K status to apply for grants and collect money
Phyllis

Melinda and Phyllis,
Whatever happened in regard to the moldy record books (see INSHELBY posts
from December 2006)? Where all of the books moldy? Did the Indiana State
Archives offer to take them, restore them, and make digital images of
them?
