Subject: [INSHELBY] Help with old Shelbyville airports (third try)
This is my third try at making this post. The previous ones have just
disappeared - no bounceback or error messages. They did have a new animated
.gif in the signature, so maybe rootsweb didn't like that. Hopefully this
will make it through:
My hope is that a few of you have good memories, and that a couple of you
are interested in aviation! While at the local airport recently, I was
given 3 items - an Addison township plat map reportedly from 1940, and
photos of two airports.
We have a modern airport here now at 350N and 100W. We now boast a 5000 ft
runway that can accommodate large business jets, at least. There is a very
nice, modern terminal building. This geographic site's history goes way
back to the time that the field (grass then) was an emergency landing site,
for postal carriers, I think. There remains a large concrete arrow that
pointed to the next waypoint for the pilots.
However, another airport existed in the 1950s, and I remember my dad taking
me there to see a friend's airplane. This airport was located on Amos Rd,
SOUTH of 44. You can see a photo of the site here. This is looking
slightly NE along Amos Rd toward 44. Amos Rd used to take a jog where it
went over the RR, but it was later straightened. The land in the photo has
since been replaced with housing additions and Loper Elementary school.
Apparently the name of the airport was SUCO or SUCCO, and the S stood for
one of the founders named Sullivan.
Later the old emergency field at 350N/100W was upgraded, and this photo was
taken in the 1960s. This is the site of the present airport, and the old
terminal building/hangar is still there. The modern terminal is a separate
building.
The 1940 Addison Township map shows a third airport ("Municipel Airport"
[spelling per map]). A study of the map indicates that the RR shown running
SW->NE is along IN 44. The N-S road on the east border of the airport is
325E, and the north border is German Rd or 100N. The southern portion of
this property is now Carter Lumber, and the north portion is still farmland.
Phyllis and I live in the plat labeled "Moberly" on 350E (east portion of
plat 26), so this is very close to our house!
Does anyone know anything about this "Municipel Airport" at 325E and 100N
(German Rd)? Mrs. Maurice Kuhn still lives on the west half of plat 26
(labeled "Kuhn), so Phyllis is planning on asking her if she remembers an
airport there.
Thanks - John Fleming
