I am trying to find out more information about Augusts Wilson (1788-1838) and his wife
Sarah aka Eleanor Lee/Lowe (1785-1876). They are buried in Ruggels cemetery in Moral
Township, Shelby Co, Indiana. There are stones for Rev Jonathan Wilson (1763 -1838) and
his wife Amelia (1766-1947) next to Augustus and I believe these are his parents. I have
heard rumors that Sarah Eleanor Lee is a relative somehow of Robert E Lee, possibly via
Richard Henry Lee but I find problems in the census data related to this link. I have
family letters that talk about the relationship but they are vague and written in the
1950's so they are of little help.
Other family members are Elizabeth and Ruth Wilson (who married brothers John and Enoch
Ruggels). Supposedly both families came from Maryland and moved to Lewis Ky in the early
1800's and from there moved to Shelby Co, Indiana in the 1830's. I believe that
Augustus, Elizabeth and Ruth are siblings but I have no firm proof of all of Augustus'
children. I believe he also had another son Jonathan (1790-1866) because his stone is also
next to Augustus' stone. There is another Jonathan Wilson living in Shelby Co, Indiana
so it is easy to confuse the two. Other family members are Caleb Taylor Wilson - he is not
buried in this cemetary and his family history is well documented. Another son Amos Wilson
married Mary Ruggels (John and Elizabeth Wilson Ruggels' daughter) and both are buried
in Ruggels cemetary. A daughter Amelia, married a Higginbotham and she is buried here but
I'm not sure where Sam Higginbotham was buried. Another daughter Sarah married Wm
Ruggles and when he died (!
and was buried here), she remarried a Thomas McFall.
What I am searching for are solid links to Maryland records for Rev Jonathan Wilson and
his wife Amelia and more information about Augustus and Eleanor Lee. There are many
Wilsons (sometimes spelled Willson) in the census and I feel they must be related because
they are listed so close to the Ruggels in the census directory - this would be William
Willson and Moses Willson.
There was a hint that Sarah Eleanor Lee's family bible had the names of her kids in it
but I haven't been able to track that down to a reputable source either.
As a last query, I am still searching for the parents of Martha Ann Powers (1827-1863).
She was born in Lewis Co, KY and died after giving birth to Abraham in 1863. Her husband
was William (sometimes has middle name Isaac) Ruggles remarried twice and ended up being
buried in Kansas. There are many Powers in Lewis Co and Shelby Co, but I haven't been
able to trace anyone with a female child that would have been her age. She married Wm in
Shelby Co, Indiana in 1846.
If anyone has comments or questions, I'd be glad to chat.
